SCOTT READY FOR HOT TIME IN MEMPHIS
IDAHO NATIVE PREPARES FOR FIRST STOP IN THE SWELTERING DIXIE DELTA
Mooresville, NC (June 24, 2008) -- Memphis Motorsports Park is located just a few minutes from Elvis Presley's former home, Graceland, and the world-famous blues haven - Beale Street. But it is not the hot licks from B.B. King's black custom Gibson guitar nor the red-hot BBQ the area is famous for that gets NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Brian Scott's attention. As the 20 year-old Idaho native prepares for this weekend's O'Reilly 200 at the .75 mile West Tennessee track his focus could be on the weather.
"One of the things I know most about Memphis is how hot it can be during the time of year we race there," Scott said. "I have heard a lot of the horror stories about how hot and humid it can be and how important it is to stay hydrated and in shape for the race. I know the racetrack resembles Richmond, different in many respects but somewhat like Richmond. Hopefully that will help because we have tested at Richmond a couple of times and thatmight help me become acclimated to the trackmore quickly. I really enjoy the challenge of going to someplace new."
Hot fun in the summer time set aside, Scott knows that a trip to Memphis is a return to short track racing. Like most NCTS competitors, Scott cut his teeth on shorts tracks across the U.S. as he moved from mini-sprints to sprint cars to late models to the Hooters Pro Cup cars. This weekend's event allows him the chance to trade paint once again. "I really enjoy short track racing like we see at Memphis," Scott says. "It is that close side by side and fender to fender racing that most of us grew up on. It is more familiar to me than the mile and a half intermediate tracks that we run in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. It is a whole different type of racing when you get to the short tracks like Memphis, Martinsville and Bristol. It is more getting position on somebody and getting beside someone in the corner and racing them side by side and taking that position away from them. On the bigger tracks it is more of a strategy passing game. You have to plan it and time it to get it just right. You can't really get position or pinch somebody down unless it is the last lap or so because that other truck is going to get loose and spin out and perhaps take you with them. The whole aerodynamic issue plays such a larger role there than on the short tracks like Memphis. Short track racing relies much more on instinct than competing on the bigger tracks."
The O'Reilly 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park is scheduled for Saturday June 28th. The event will be telecast live nationally on SPEED at 9:00 pm ET. The event will be broadcast via radio worldwide on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SIRIUS Satellite Radio NASCAR Channel 128.
