Federated Auto Parts 250 Saturday Notebook By Brett Borden
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 15, 1998) Notes from Saturday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Federated Auto Parts 250 at Nashville Speedway USA:
It was a tough weekend for the Chevrolets in the Music City. With eight of the top-13 trucks in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings coming in, the Chevys chased the Fords and Dodges around the .596-mile oval all day Saturday. The top-four trucks in Bud Pole Qualifying Friday were Fords, as well as eight of the top-11. Then on race day, it was a Dodge in Victory Lane followed by three Fords.
Joe Ruttman came home on a roll, having made his way past Jack Sprague into second place in the points standings. The Franklin, Tenn., resident's bad luck on his adopted home track continued, however. Ruttman's best finish in three series starts at Nashville Speedway USA remains his 1996 13th-place effort, as he contended early but fell all the way to 24th at the finish.
Before Saturday's race, only two of the drivers who qualified outside the top-20 had brought home a top-10 finish at Nashville. It happened twice in one race this year, though, as winner Jimmy Hensley came all the way from 30th, while Ron Hornaday protected his points lead by salvaging a seventh-place finish out of a 27th-place start.
The Craftsman Convoy and Fan Fest will return this Thursday and Friday for the Lund Look 275K at Heartland Park Topeka. There will be an autograph session on Thursday at Sears in the Metcalfe Mall in Overland Park, Kan., at 6 p.m., followed by the Craftsman Convoy from the mall to the speedway. Then on Friday night there will be another autograph session/fan fest at the Westridge Mall in Topeka.
The national anthem was sung by Nan Sumrall, who serves as Gary Chapman's new sidekick on TNN's Prime Time Country television show.
