Dodge does everything but win at I-70 By Brett Borden
ODESSA, Mo. (May 22, 1999) The Chevrolet of Jack Sprague may have won the O'Reilly Auto Parts 200 at I-70 Speedway on Saturday, but Dodge as a manufacturer was the clear winner on this weekend. Four of the five Dodges in the field finished in the top eight. The fifth placed 20th, making Dodge's average finish a healthy 7.9.
First among the Dodges and second in the race was Dennis Setzer in the No. 1 Mopar Peformance entry. Setzer was the only one in the field who had anything for Sprague at the end of the race, and ended up a truck length away from his first victory of the year.
"The truck was great all day and this crew did a great job getting us off of pit road in the lead. We developed a push late in the race and we just had the second fastest truck at the end of the race. Jack ran a great race and he just had a fast truck at the end. We are looking forward to another strong run at Bristol Motor Speedway in two weeks."
Stacy Compton, who lost his lead atop the point standings the week before at Pikes Peak, moved to within 27 points of the lead with a fourth-place finish. He picked up points on former leader Ron Hornaday, but lost a few to Sprague, who went from second to first in the standings.
"That was a pretty tough race, but it was a good race for this Royal Crown Dodge. It was a pretty physical race, the track was coming apart but they did a great job sweeping the track to keep it in good race condition. It was a good race for this team and especially after what happened last weekend. It shows how strong this team is, and we know that we will be a contender for this championship before the season is over."
Jimmy Hensley put his Dodge by Petty Dodge out front early in the race, but fought handling all day long and had to settle for fifth.
"It was a great race, but we were loose all day and just could not get it tightened up all day," said Hensley. "We were strong early in the race, and this team did a great job on pit road."
Randy Tolsma had a top-5 truck for much of the race, but a late mishap involving his teammate cost him and he had to settle for an eighth-place finish.
"Good day for the Supergard Dodge," said Tolsma. "Everything was going well. We were catching the yellow right for the pit stops and we got together with Stacy toward the end of the race and we ended up in the wall. I hate it for this team because we have worked so hard, but we know that we will continue to improve week after week."
