Nemechek picks up second win of 1998

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 25, 1998) Joe Nemechek became the first NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver to win twice this year -- both on superspeedways -- when he took the lead late and captured the Touchstone Energy 300 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Nemechek, who started on the Bud Pole in his BellSouth Mobility Chevrolet, finished 0.171 seconds ahead of Phil Parsons, who rallied in the latter portion of the race to finish second. Mike McLaughlin led for a good portion of the event, but was passed by Nemechek and Parsons during the final laps and finished third.

The victory is the seventh career series triumph for Nemechek, who opened the season with a win in the NAPA Auto Parts 300 at Daytona International Speedway, also a superspeedway. He became the first driver to win from the Bud Pole in nine races this year.

Nemechek, who starts 11th in Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup Series DieHard 500, continues to run a limited number of races on the NASCAR Busch Series. He has two wins, two third-place finishes and one sixth in his five series races this season.

Young gun Buckshot Jones and veteran Dick Trickle rounded out the top-five.

The next stop on the NASCAR Busch Series will be the New Hampshire 200, at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H., on Saturday, May 9.
