Jeff Anton's Sixth Place Adirondack Finish Is His Best Yet

Beaver Falls, N.Y. (July 29, 2006) - Jeff Anton of Russell, Mass. finished sixth in Saturday night's NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series race at Adirondack International Speedway. For the second-year driver of the No. 30 Engineered Floors Inc. Chevrolet, it's his best-ever finish and moved him up a spot in the season points standings to run ninth with four races left to run.

"I'm really glad to finish sixth, but I wish we had more laps because I think we would have finished better than sixth, we just ran out of laps," he said after the race.

Being eighth fastest in the opening practice session showed promise of a good night ahead. Qualifying sixth was an even better sign. But 34 laps into the feature event, things took a turn for the worse. He got spun around by another competitor to bring out a caution. Anton rejoined the race still on the lead lap and did not pit as he lined up to restart at the tail of the field.

The early spin did not adversely affect Anton's car as it was back in the top ten before 100 of 150 scheduled laps were run. But Anton wanted fresh tires, and he pitted for those under a lap 106 caution.

"We were just a little too snug in the center," he said. "And I didn't really want to make any changes on the pit stop, but I knew we were taking on two tires and I figured that those alone would take care of a lot of our problem. My guys did a great job in the pits, we didn't lose any spots on the stop and I was ready to go. The fresh tires helped a lot, although it still was a little too snug in the center."

Anton quickly jumped back into the top ten, and ran all the way to sixth place as the race was extended to 162 laps due to a late accident and resulting clean-up. He credited his late-race charge to the fresh tires.

"Those two tires helped a lot," he said. "I would have been running tenth or twelfth, and I wouldn't have felt confident sticking my nose under anyone because I would have been sliding and taken someone out. Having those two fresh ties meant I could come off turn four and drive right under anyone and stay down there. I could fly off those turns and that's where I was getting everyone."

The highlight of Anton's race was racing with his crew chief Dale Quarterley, who wound up finishing one spot ahead.

"I had a blast out there running with Dale, we were running with each other the whole race," Anton said. "I know we made it three-wide a coupe times going into turn one. And when Dale's around, I'm not willing to budge at all. It's every man for himself out there. We'll run each other clean, but we won't give each other an inch."

After a couple weekends with no East Series races scheduled, Anton will return to action on Saturday, August 19th at Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, Connecticut.
