Tracy Gordon Follows Up NHIS Top-Five With Adirondack Top-Ten
Beaver Falls, N.Y. (July 29, 2006) - In a race he didn't know he was going to run until a little more than a week before, Tracy Gordon put the No. 33 Woodworks Racing/Archer Corp. Ford Taurus into the top ten for the third time in four NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series races this year. His eighth-place run at Adirondack International Speedway in Beaver Falls, N.Y. came in a car that he felt could have won, but late-race restarts cost the Strong, Maine driver positions after running as high as fourth.
"I had an awesome car. I'm disappointed for all these guys," Gordon said even though this race continued the part-time Woodworks Racing's best season yet.
The car, which last saw action at New Hampshire International Speedway two weeks ago, finishing fourth, was not handling well at the start of Saturday afternoon's practice sessions. But the Fred Skaff-led crew never gave up, changing springs and shocks and almost everything else in the search for speed. In qualifying, Gordon time-trialed tenth fastest.
>From the drop of the green flag, Gordon was going forward. He made steady progress to the point where he was running fourth after a lap 69 (of 150) restart, but restarts cost the Maine driver as the outside lane was not the place to be.
"I wasn't on my marks on a couple restarts, but if I was off a little bit and on the inside it wouldn't have hurt. But if you lose a half a car length on the outside you have to forfeit that spot," he explained. "I messed up on a couple restarts and between that and being stuck on the outside we didn't finish where we should have."
On the next restart he fell to seventh, but recovered to run sixth just in time for another caution and another restart on the outside lane. He was eighth on the final green-white-checker restart and held his ground through the final two-lap sprint to the finish.
"We came here and at first we weren't that quick, but they kept working on it and working on it and they got it good enough to win the race," Gordon said after the race. "I feel as if I had the fastest car here. They gave me a wicked good car, it was the best car I've driven in a long time. We were still faster than most of the guys on new tires but we kept getting stuck on the outside, even on the last restart. I'm disappointed for the whole Woodworks crew.
"I could take a real wide arc going into the turns and eat them all up there," Gordon continued. "I was getting into a couple of guys because I was getting back into the throttle while I was still going into the turns. I'd be picking the throttle back up and they'd still be slowing down for the turn and I'd get into the back of them. The car was awesome."
