NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, BUSCH EAST SERIES AND NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR CHAMPIONS TO BE HONORED DEC. 15-16
Whelen Modified champion Stefanik to receive record-tying ninth championship trophy
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 8, 2006) - Two of NASCAR's most prestigious titles for regional racing champions, the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series and Whelen Modified Tour championships, will officially be presented along with other seasonal awards on consecutive nights at the Mohegan Sun Resort, in Uncasville, Conn., on the weekend of December 15-16.
The Busch East Series awards banquet is scheduled for Friday night, Dec. 15, while the Whelen Modified Tour takes the stage on Saturday night, Dec. 16.
Mike Olsen, of North Haverhill, N.H., will receive the Busch East Series championship for the second time in his career, and share the honors with most of the same No. 61 Little Trees Chevrolet team members as in his previous title season of 2001. They include his grandfather and Fadden Racing founder Stanley "Stub" Fadden, crew chief Harry Norcross, and sponsor representatives from Car Freshner Corporation, which has backed Olsen's team for 11 consecutive years -- one of the longest-running team sponsorships in NASCAR.
Among other drivers receiving Busch East Series special awards will be Sunoco Rookie of the Year Ruben Pardo, of Mexico City, and Busch Pole Award champion Sean Caisse, of Pelham, N.H., who was runner-up to Olsen in the series championship contest.
Saturday night will be Mike Stefanik's turn in the spotlight for his seventh Whelen Modified Tour championship and his ninth NASCAR touring series title overall, including two in the Busch East Series (1997 and '98).
Stefanik, of Coventry, R.I., won previous Whelen Modified Tour championships in 1989, 1991, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002, however, it will mark the first time at the championship table for Flamingo Motorsports car owner Eric Sanderson and crew chief Stan Szaban. James Civali, of Meriden, Conn., will be honored as the Whelen Modified Tour Sunoco Rookie of the Year and five-time Tour champion Tony Hirschman, of Northampton, Pa., will receive the Budweiser Pole Award for the third time in the last four seasons.
Mohegan Sun, the primary sponsor of Matt Kobyluck's No. 40 Chevrolet on the Busch East Series, hosts to the doubleheader banquet weekend for the fourth consecutive year.
