Tracy Gordon's Last Tune-Up Before NHIS Is Twelfth Place Thompson Speedway Run
(Thompson, Conn. - June 29, 2006) - The Woodworks Racing team considers the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series races at New Hampshire International Speedway and Dover International Speedway to be its bread and butter, while the two short-track races run in the spring to be tune-ups for the team and driver Tracy Gordon. While last week's fourth place run at Holland International Speedway was much more than the team was hoping for, Thursday's race at Thompson International Speedway wasn't quite as good, with Gordon getting a twelfth place finish.
With the older of the two cars in the Woodworks Racing team's stable, Gordon came back to Thompson, where he's won in Busch North competition, and after two practice sessions made his qualifying attempt and took the eighteenth starting spot.
"I kind of knew the car wouldn't qualify too great, because it wasn't that fast in the first practice and then it started getting better," he explained. "I knew it wouldn't qualify that well but I didn't think it'd be this bad. I've got my work cut out for me with just a hundred laps to run. We'll get going when they throw the green and hope to get into the top ten by the time it's over. I think the car's going to come in a little slowly, but after ten or fifteen laps it should come back in. We'll be all set then."
Just like at Holland just five days earlier, Gordon worked his way into the top ten before half of the Pepsi 100 was in the books. But the car was tightening up, and the Strong, Maine driver couldn't keep it in the top ten through a series of late-race restarts. He battled hard with a group of five drivers and eventually finished twelfth.
"I thought the way the car was set up would be good for the race, but it was just way too snug from the middle off," he said. "We came here to play and get some seat time, and then we got our expectations kind of high after Holland, but this still isn't too bad."
