Big Diamond ready for NASCAR-WRS by Dodge opener, strong field of regulars plus a few surprises
Minersville, PA (March 31, 2002) - This Sunday afternoon, April 7, will see Big Diamond Raceway open the track gates at noon for the 31st straight season. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series by Dodge on track racing action is scheduled to start at 2PM for the Modifieds, Sportsmen and Roadrunners.
This season Big Diamond will operate on Sunday afternoons through the month of April and one week in May before shifting to the regular weekly Friday night schedule on May 10. Racing on April 7 and 14 will start at 2 PM while the events on April 21, April 28 and May 5 will start at 4 PM.
The Sunday afternoon activities reportedly will draw a few invaders from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania to take on the regular list of expected Modified stars which includes defending champion Keith Hoffman, Duane Howard, Craig Von Dohren, Jeff Strunk, Steve Bottcher, Ray Swinehart, Shawn Reimert, Rick Laubach, Jim Hauer, Kyle Weiss, Tim Fitzpatrick and many others.
But the only way to see who will or will not be there and ready to go is to be there in person on Sunday.
"There are a number of invaders that have reportedly secured rides or have purchased engines for their regular rides that are PA 358 Modified legal for the Opener, but we have been unable to confirm or refute most of these reports. It does sounds like Jersey's Billy Pauch and New Yorker Todd Burley will likely be on hand as well as a few others," stated race director Jeff Gromis. "We also expect Grandview regulars who have not competed with us on a regular basis to take Sunday trip to Big Diamond should they not have problems on Saturday evening at Grandview's opener."
The biggest list of drivers may well be in the Sportsman class. The Big Diamond field has grown and several new drivers have moved up from the roadrunners and other classes into the Sportsman. With five Sunday afternoon races this spring and several Sportsman specials, invaders from other speedways have indicated is worth their money to join NASCAR and buy the tires required to take on the Big Diamond regulars.
Among the Big Diamond stars expected to be in action to contend for 2002 crown as defending champion, Dave Dissinger, is cutting back on his schedule and will not be a regular weekly racer this season. Tom Brennan is ready to contend for the title against the likes of Billy Moyer, Jr., Dale Hartz, Jeff Ebersole, Shawn Fitzpatrick, John Deatrich, Jr., Craig Whitmoyer, Jesse Sterling, Brent Boyer, Randy Mohn, Brad Force and many others.
