Minersville, PA - May 24 - Racing resumes at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA this Friday, May 25, on "True Value Hardware Night at the Races" including the first NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified Stock Car championship race of the 2001 season.

The NASCAR-sanctioned True Value action gets underway at 8 PM featuring the NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman and NASCAR Roadrunners as well as the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds going in a 35-lap Spring Championship with the winner earning $2500. As a special added benefit for the fans to insure the additional ten laps of the Modified 35 are as exciting as the first 25, all heat qualifiers will be eligible to be handicapped. That means the track top guns will be coming from three to five spots deeper in the field than usual.

Duane Howard of Oley, PA has been very successful at Big Diamond taking three of the five $2000 feature event wins this season in the Big Spring Car Wash #126 owned by Glenn Hyneman. The team currently has just the right combination to get the power of their Lombardo built engines to the track with their Troyer car and it is giving the other competitors fits.

Jeff Strunk of Bethel, PA and Terry Meitzler of Kutztown, PA have hit 'paydirt' with feature wins this year but they certainly would like to see more tallies in the win column. Past winning drivers like defending track champion Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA, Craig Von Dohren of Barto, PA, Meme DeSantis of Temple, PA, Ray Swinehart of Bechtelsville, PA and Jimmy Hauer of Lebanon, PA are still looking for their first Big Diamond win of the year. Add to that list of strong 2001 contenders the names of Barry Readinger of Fleetwood, PA, newcomers Jerry Higbie, Jr. of Slate, NY, and Johnny Ray of Reading, PA, Mr. Excitement - Bobby Trapper of Scranton, PA, Glenn Strunk of Bechtelsville, PA, Kyle Weiss of Hamburg, PA and Tom Umbenhauer of Richland, PA and your have a number of hungry racers.

One week later on June 1, the winged super sportsman stars make their return along with the NASCAR Modifieds and Roadrunners. The super sportsman teams, based out of Silver Spring Speedway, return to Big Diamond for the first time since June 30, 1997 when Steve Wilbur took the victory.

Currently Frankie Herr and Carmen Perigo, Jr. are repeating the battle they have waged for the past two seasons for the Sportsman Tour point lead. Other top ten tour competitors include Danny Hager, Donnie Beaver, Howie Locke, Rich Eichelberger, Pat Cannon, J. R. Fry, Russ Mitten and Ken Carberry. Schuylkill County driver Billy Schoffstall is also a tour regular as well as past Big Diamond stars Keith Prutzman and Kirby Sites, both of Hamburg, PA.
