Kyle Weiss takes Big Diamond Modified season opener; Singley tops Sportsman, Hendricks paces Roadrunners

Minersville, Pa - April 7, 2002 - Kyle Weiss of Hamburg, PA powered his Brickel's Racing Collectables 21K to his second career Modified win in the 25-lap season opening feature for Big Diamond Raceway's NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge on Sunday afternoon. Scott Singley of Milford, NJ took the 20-lap Sportsman Stock feature while Doug Hendricks of Auburn, PA captured the Roadrunner 15-lapper.

Weiss started the 25-lap Modified feature second as the winner of the second qualifying heat. Opening heat winner, Jason Andrews of Palmerton, started on the pole and got away quickly to take the early lead on the sun and wind-dried track. Andrews gave Weiss an opening as they came off turn four to complete lap two and Weiss used it to take the lead in turn one. Andrews then had to deal with Bethel's Jeff Strunk, who started fifth in the Cummins W9. On a lap seven Strunk was able to work under Andrews for second as Billy Pauch (Frenchtown, NJ), Keith Hoffman (Whitehall), Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) and Todd Bashore (Bethel) also got under Andrews. In fact on one of the three lap seven restarts, Strunk was actually able to draw even with Weiss before the yellow reappeared.

Weiss continued to stick down low and prevent Strunk from making a run while the real battle was for sixth through twelfth involving Andrews, Meme DeSantis (Temple), Todd Burley (Spencerport, NY), Kenny Brightbill (Sinking Spring), Duane Howard (Oley), Craig Von Dohren (Barto) and Danny Johnson (Rochester, NY). Brightbill dropped out on lap 16 but the others continued to shuffle positions. With four to go Burley bobbled off turn two to drop him out of the top ten.

At the finish it was Kyle Weiss and his Farber Technologies / Madd Nellie's Restaurant / Weaknecht Sporting Goods 21K Olsen car. by 1.03 seconds over Jeff Strunk, defending track champion Keith Hoffman, Terry Meitzler, Billy Pauch, Jason Andrews, Meme DeSantis, Duane Howard, Craig Von Dohren, and Danny Johnson. Heat winners were Andrews, Weiss, Pauch and Hoffman while the consolations were taken by Kevin Graver, Jr. (Lehighton) and DeSantis.

Jesse Sterling of Lehighton, the opening Sportsman heat winner looked like he would go wire-to-wire for the win as his chief rival, Donn Edgar of Lehighton developed a flat right front tire on lap 11 and third place Ed Scott of New Tripoli dropped out on lap 14. But that's when the excitement started. Craig Whitmoyer (Hamburg) made a bold move in turns one and two to go under Sterling but Scott Singley came off turn two under all three. Whitmoyer held on to lead lap 15 but Singley was to his inside and he took command on lap 17 while Sterling charged back under Whitmoyer as well but not Billy Moyer (Pine Grove) went under both cars to side into second with Sterling and Whitmoyer now right behind. Moyer bobbled on lap 18 and the Sterling-Whitmoyer when by him.

Scott Singley took his third career Big Diamond Sportsman feature win, in his Gary Bouc Racing Engines/Gary's Septic Service 7X, over a frustrated Jesse Sterling, the resurging Billy Moyer, Jr., Craig Whitmoyer, Randy Mohn (Fredericksburg), Lance Hoch (Topton), Brent Boyer (Bloomsburg), Luke Wagner (Hershey), Donn Edgar and Andy Fayash, Jr. (Mary-D). Heat winners were Sterling, Hoch and Edgar while Dale Hartz (Hamburg) took the consolation.

Doug Hendricks was able to go wire-to-wire in the 15-lap Roadrunner feature in his JR Trucking 8 to win over Rodney Ulsh, Phil Levering, Kevin Holland and Dave Winslow. Dave Miller and Dave Winslow made early runs at the lead but Miller dropped out and Winslow faded while Ulsh took up the charge but fell short. Heat winners were Hendricks and Winslow in the 19 car field.

Big Diamond continues the season with another Sunday afternoon program this week (April 14) with a 2PM starting time. With no tracks competing with Big Diamond for drivers, a similar field of stars is expected including modified invaders Danny Johnson, Kenny Brightbill, and Todd Burley. Gates will open at 11AM to the pits and Noon to the stands. For more information call the track at (570) 544-6434 or check out the track's all new website at www.bigdiamondraceway.com.
