Week of weather extremes stops Big Diamond action Sunday, April 21; NASCAR Modifieds, Sportsman, Roadrunners return April 28.
Minersville, PA - April 21 - Following a week of sun and temperatures in the high 80's, the weekend arrived with temperatures dropping into the 40's by Sunday and sun yielding to clouds and rain forcing the third event of the 2002 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge at Big Diamond Raceway to be postponed.
Action will return to Big Diamond Raceway next Sunday afternoon, April 28, at 4 PM with the kickoff to the track's participation in the national VALVOLINE CUP. The NASCAR Modified, Sportsman and Roadrunner stock cars will be in action with the Roadrunners running two feature events, one delayed from the April 14 card by rain.
Meme DeSantis of Temple, PA, leads the NASCAR Modified point standings after one week behind the wheel of the Norm's Save Station 357. DeSantis, who won the most recent modified feature at Big Diamond, has 355 points and leads last year's top duo at Big Diamond, defending champion Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA and Duane Howard of Oley, Pa, both with 335 points. Tied for fourth in the rundown are past Champion Jeff Strunk of Bethel, PA and Terry Meitzler of Kutztown, PA with 325 points each.
Completing the top ten in Modified points are Craig Von Dohren (Barto, PA) at 315, rookie Todd Burley (Spencerport, NY) at 295, Opening Day winner Kyle Weiss (Hamburg, PA) at 275, Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville, PA) at 265 and Brian Johnson (Quakertown, PA) at 253. Danny Johnson (Rochester, NY) and Larry Kelleher (Scranton, PA) are with two points of the top ten, with 252 and 251 points respectively, followed by Bob Ebersole (Hummelstown, PA), Jason Andrews (Palmerton, PA), Todd Bashore (Bethel, PA).
Milford, New Jersey driver Scott Singley leads the Sportsman-Modified standings with 375 points. He is followed by Craig Whitmoyer of Hamburg, PA with 370, Jesse Sterling of Lehighton, PA with 340, Donn Edgar of Lehighton, PA with 305 and Luke Wagner of Grantville, PA with 295. The next ten in order are Brent Boyer (Bloomsburg, PA), Billy Moyer, Jr. (Pine Grove, PA), Joe Goerner (Hamburg, PA), Jeff Ebersole (Palmyra. PA), Lance Hoch (Topton, PA), Paul Marra, Sr. (Bordentown, NJ), rookie Fred Fisher (Womelsdorf, PA), Randy Mohn (Fredericksburg, PA), Darren Dreher (Orwigsburg, PA) and Dale Hartz (Hamburg, PA). Singley and Whitmoyer each have a feature win in the Big Diamond Sportsman cars thus far in 2002.
With the rain interruption of the roadrunner feature on April 14, the roadrunner point has really yet to start as the current standings are the same as the finishing order of the opener. Doug Hendricks of Auburn, PA leads the way over Rodney Ulsh (Summit Station, PA), Phil Levering (Parkerford, PA), Kevin Holland (Pottsville, PA), and Dave Winslow (Fleetwood, PA).
This Sunday, representatives from RaceFan Marketing will be on hand to kickoff Big Diamond Raceway's involvement in the VALVOLINE CUP with about 300 other tracks. Big Diamond drivers from each of the track's three divisions will compete against drivers across the country in three different groups of classes similar to their level of competition. Along with the VALVOLINE CUP National Trophy for the winners of each division, there will be a lucrative points fund, national and regional awards, a buying program for drivers and teams, contingency prizes and more.
