Big Diamond Stevenson Memorial returns to twin-20 format; Modifieds run for $1700 to win, $150 to start each.
Minersville, PA - June 27 - The Georgie Stevenson Memorial at Big Diamond Raceway on July 5 will feature a Twin-20 format for the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds and Fireworks.
The winner's share of the 20-lap purse for each modified feature has been raised from the normal $1500 to $1700. Each feature will also pay a minimum of $150 to cars starting each of the 28-car features. Additionally over $400 in lap money will be handed out to the modifieds.
One of the biggest fields of modifieds this season is anticipated for the Stevenson Memorial, dedicated to the memory of Georgie Stevenson and his spirit of working to raise funds to help others while dealing with his personal battle with disease that cut his life tragically short.
The Modifieds will be joined on the card by the NASCAR Sportsman and Roadrunners yielding three 20-lap feature events and a single 15-lap feature following qualifying events. And, if the fireworks on the track are not enough, Big Diamond officials have signed contracts for an awesome fireworks display that will light the July 5 skies over the track in celebration of Independence Day as part of the Stevenson Memorial.
Collected sponsorship money will also be shared with the sportsman class in the form of either lap money or added payoff to the top one or two feature finishers.
The Stevenson event was originally planned to be a 50-lap feature on the schedule but weather has led to this being changed. The double feature for the Modifieds will assist drivers competing at Big Diamond to achieve the minimum point race requirement to contend for the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge regional championship. The high number of rainouts already during the 2002 season has taken its toll on the 2002 schedule and hopefully the weather will be more favorable for the rest of the season.
Defending track champion, Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA, currently leads the Big Diamond Modified point standings but he's feeling the pressure from Duane Howard (Oley, PA), Meme DeSantis (Temple, PA), Terry Meitzler (Kutztown, PA) and Craig Von Dohren (Barto, PA). Hoffman took his first win of the season last week at Big Diamond and appears to be jelling with his new team owned by 2001 Big Diamond Rookie of the Year driver, Johnny Ray. Keith's brother, Dave has also been giving attention to the Abbi Electric/C&M Machine sponsored #1 Troyer car and the team hopes last week's performance is an indication of things to come.
Several competitors from all three Big Diamond classes took the opportunity on Tuesday night, June 25, to tune their cars and driving skills in an effort to challenge the established 2002 stars. Among the eight modified drivers on hand were Jimmy Hauer, Jack Hartnett and Smokey Warren. Nine Sportsman drivers practiced led by Andy Fayash, Darren Dreher, Fred Fisher and Brent Boyer while thirteen roadrunners from both Big Diamond and Selinsgrove got laps in. The new IMSA Modified of Carl Graves was on hand as well as the super sportsman cars of Howie Locke and Dave Neuman, the URC Sprint of Pete Green and the 358 Sprint of Keith Prutzman.
