NASCAR Celebrates Black History Month

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2007) -- The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) announced a month-long series of events to celebrate Black History Month. The events aim to increase awareness about the sport among African-American communities to help further diversify the sport.

"NASCAR celebrates Black History Month and honors the contributions of African-Americans in motorsports and society," said Marcus Jadotte, NASCAR managing director of public affairs, who oversees the diversity department. "Our diversity initiatives throughout the month are just a part of our year-long commitment to further diversify the sport."

The plans include introducing students to the sport via NASCAR's two biggest events of the month -- the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona on Feb. 10 and the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18. At the Budweiser Shootout, select engineering students from Florida A&M University will tour the track to learn about the technical elements of the sport. Students from Bethune-Cookman College will experience the same tour during the Daytona 500 the following week.

Another element, the NASCAR College Tour, will kick off at the end of the month at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. NASCAR will have representatives at the event and will participate in several elements including the Ford Fan Experience, High School Career Day and Showtime at the Apollo presented by Coca-Cola.

NASCAR representatives will also attend career fairs at Florida A&M University, Bethune-Cookman College, Metrolina Career Consortium and North Carolina A&T State University throughout the month.

"NASCAR has developed a great relationship with a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) over the last several years," Jadotte said. "Programs like these go a long way in building awareness of NASCAR and the vast career opportunities available within the sport."

NASCAR will visit a Charlotte-based elementary school and middle school to bring the NASCAR experience to students on campus. The hour-long assemblies will include autograph sessions with Drive for Diversity drivers.

At the end of the month, NASCAR will participate in the Giant Steps Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS). The NCAS is dedicated to creating a better society by focusing on educational attainment and using the power and appeal of sport to positively affect social change. NASCAR will be a Red, White and Blue sponsor.

Throughout the month, NASCAR will air special television, print, radio and online advertisements created for Black History Month. The television spot features children from the Urban Youth Racing School and pays tribute to the past, present and future of African-American contributions to NASCAR. The Urban Youth Racing School is a non-profit organization that provides inner-city youths in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. the opportunity to learn about motorsports.

In addition, NASCAR is working with media partners NASCAR.COM, SPEED, Sirius Satellite Radio, Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Performance Racing Network (PRN) to develop special Black History Month programming.
