Pair of Accidents Slow Ryan Seaman to Finish Adirondack Race Fifteenth
(Beaver Falls, N.Y. - July 31, 2004) - Ryan Seaman and the whole ERS Motorsports team had a tough day at Adirondack International Speedway. Between dodging rain showers, having a suspension problem right at the end of practice, and having no qualifying at a track they've never seen before, Seaman got to race in the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series Kinney Drugs 150 Saturday night. Things did not get much better in the race, though, as Seaman was an innocent victim in a pair of accidents that left him finishing fifteenth with a car that'll need some long nights in the shop before it'll be ready to go to the next race.
The rain interrupted the first practice session at the half-mile track, and then forced the night's schedule to be jumbled with qualifying being scrubbed. Seaman would start the race from the seventeenth starting spot. A second practice was held in the early evening, with a quick turnaround time to get the cars off the track at the end of that practice, through inspection, and lined up to race when a weather window opened.
Seaman's troubles started right at the end of that second practice session, when the bracket for the Panhard bar broke, leaving the rear axle swinging from side to side. As other teams started going through inspection, the ERS Motorsports crew was welding repairs to the bracket. Those repairs were done in time to get the car through inspection and in line to race.
In that race, Seaman ran fifteenth until caution flew on lap 56, allowing many drivers to pit. Seaman stayed on the track and moved all the way up to ninth place. But those with fresh tires came through the field and put him back into the teens.
On lap 78, Seaman encountered the first of two accidents that started ahead of him.
"Kelly Moore and Eddie MacDonald got together and I caught the tail end of it," he said. "There was nowhere to go."
Seaman tried going underneath Moore's spun car but caught the back of it, doing body damage to the right side of his Erbe Carting Chevrolet and flattening the right-side tires. He pitted for repairs and returned to the race, although he was now a lap down. He tried to soldier on to the end of the race but more drivers ahead of him tangled with just a few laps to go, scattering the field in the first turn behind a smoke screen from spinning tires.
"We got down to ten laps to go and they had that big wreck there in one and two," Seaman explained. "I thought I had missed it, I thought I was clear of it but a car rolled down into the infield and there was nowhere to go. I ran into the side of him and it poked a hole in the radiator. There were only a few laps left after that but I didn't want to take a chance on hurting the motor, so we had to pull off the track. We only lost two positions, going from thirteenth to fifteenth.
"Fifteenth isn't too bad considering all we had to contend with today," he said. "It could have been a whole lot worse, we could have really taken a hit in the points. The guys that are around me in the points finished right in front of me, so nobody should have picked up that much on me. But we've got a lot of work to do to get ready for the Glen. It's not going to be an easy week or so for us, that's for sure. Hopefully we'll have a little better performance at the Glen."
Watkins Glen International is the site of the next Busch North Series race, which will be run on August 14th. For more information, visit www.ryanseaman.com.
