Penfold runs in top ten at Beech Ridge before accident ruins his day

Bill Penfold and the Penfold Motorsports Team were looking forward to their chances in the PrimeStar 150 NASCAR Busch North Series, Touring Division event at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine Saturday night. Bill has run many events at this track, as he makes his home just minutes away in Yarmouth, Maine. He has several wins under his belt at this track.

The team had been at the Ridge practicing two weeks earlier, with great results. After solid laps in practice on Saturday afternoon, Bill was able to qualify the teams #0 VIP Charters - neracing.com Chevy 15th, solidly in the field of 31 cars that attempted to make the race. Another Maine native, Jeff Taylor won the Bud Pole Award, his first of the young season.

When the green flag dropped, Bill quickly starting moving the VIP Charters - neracing.com Chevy up through the tight traffic. He cracked the top ten early and moved up to seventh before Bryan Wall took the position. Shortly after Wall passed Bill, Wall made contact with another Maine driver, Kelly Moore. Moore was making his 200th start of his BNS career.

Moore spun in turn four, after the contact with Wall. When Moore spun, Bill was right behind him and had no where to go but right into Kelly's car. Both cars suffered heavy damage, but were able to get into the pits. Both were able to return to the track, but many laps down and out of contention for the win. Bill rode out the remainder of the race, needing to gain as many valuable points as possible.

Bill was able to finish the event 29th. The finish dropped him from 15th in the points down to 16th, but the season is still young and the team feels good luck is just around the corner.

"We were all pretty excited about the car here," said Penfold after the race. "We had a top five car. I wasn't even driving it hard, but I was moving around traffic easily. We could have had something for them later in the race, if we had just a little luck. That's how our luck has been so far, but its going to change for us soon, I can feel it. The cars Bob gives me every week are great and it's just a matter of time."

"The team is doing a great job," said team manager Ray Penfold. "We just can't shake the bad luck. Bill was doing great and had a car that was moving well in the traffic, but we got caught up in some other over-anxious driver's wreck. There wasn't any need for it, but that has been how our luck has been so far this year. We'll try again next week."

The team heads to Jennerstown for the double header with the Featherlite Modified Series next weekend. The team will bring the same car they had this weekend at Beech Ridge.
