Electrical woes stop Joey McCarthy's Beech Ridge race early.

Randolph, New Jersey's Joey McCarthy made the first of two trips to Beech Ridge Motor Speedway to run the fifth race of the NASCAR Busch North Series season. Despite an encouraging eighteenth place qualifying effort and ensuing race that saw him run as high as sixth place, McCarthy's Trim Spa/Mannings USA Chevrolet encountered an electrical problem that left the car unable to continue in the race, leaving him 28th at the finish.

The McCarthy/Pritchard Motorsports crew had a busy afternoon practice at the Scarborough, Maine track, struggling with a lack of grip. Changes were made to prepare for qualifying, and the car responded fairly well by turning the eighteenth fastest time.

"I can't feel the race track at all," McCarthy said. "But I get tight in spots too. It's just a matter of how well I can slide around. We didn't have a good practice session because the tire was falling off the car all the time. I put the wrong wheel bearing on it so that messed everything up."

Between qualifying and the race, the team went back to work on the car, changing the rear end gear ratio and setting up the chassis for a track that they expected would tighten up.

McCarthy fell out of the top twenty in the race's early laps, and took advantage of a lap 27 caution to come to pit road and make more adjustments to the car, including putting on fresh right-side tires. Returning to the race, he made progress towards the front, returning to the top twenty.

On lap 107, under caution, many of the lead lap cars came to pit road while McCarthy stayed on the track, moving up to sixth place. He looked to be in good shape to have a top ten finish, but when the race returned to green, McCarthy only made one more lap and then the car completely shut down on him. He had to be pushed back to pit road where the diagnosis was an electrical problem and the car could not be repaired in time to return to the race. He was classified as 28th in the final rundown.

"I'm totally frustrated," he said after the race. "It's something electrical, where the main power switch just shorted out. Before that, the car was really decent. We changed tires and it tightened up, since it was really loose in the beginning. We tightened it up and after that we were one of the fastest cars out there. We were just as fast as the leader, maybe even two tenths faster than the leader.

"Everything we did will help us here next time," McCarthy continued. "It's just a shame that our finish wasn't what it should be. We were doing well, we were just pacing ourselves and saving the tires. I just hate it for Trim Spa and Mannings. We were running well, I think we would have had a decent finish."

Next on the McCarthy/Pritchard Motorsports schedule is the first of three trips to Stafford Motor Speedway. The race will be held on Friday, June 21st. For more information on the team, visit its website at www.mccarthy-pritchard-motorsports.com.
