Scarborough, ME -- Before a hometown crowd in Southern Maine, NAPA Auto Parts driver Kelly Moore earned his sixth top-5 finish of the season with a second place finish on Saturday evening at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. Moore moved back into the second spot in the championship point standings, and with five races remaining trails Andy Santerre by 100 points.
"We had a pretty decent car right off the hauler and made a few adjustments before qualifying," commented Moore. "I thought we were going to pick up another Bud Pole award but Mike Olsen runs good here and turned a good lap to beat us."
The NAPA Auto Parts/Bill Dodge Auto Group team has worked the short tracks with amazing consistency during the month of August, and Moore was within striking distance to capture his third win of the season but Mike Johnson and Mike Olsen had the field covered.
The pre-race strategy for the Maine Lubrication Services/Shell Rotella T pit crew did entail pitting after the half-way point of the event, but due to long green flag racing periods, the team decided to hold onto the track position and duke it out with Johnson and Olsen, who also elected to go with a no pit strategy.
"I'm not convinced that a stop for tires would've made us more competitive," said Moore. "The track got slick in the later stages and those teams that elected to pit didn't really gain that much."
The Scarborough, ME native ran the entire race in the top-3 and was excited to put on a good show for his local sponsors who were in attendance.
"We have a number of sponsors from the Portland, ME area who attend the Beech Ridge events, and were always excited to have them visit with the team before the race, and putting up a good finish like we did helps get them more enthused about our motor sports program," Moore said.
With five races remaining in the 2003 schedule, the NAPA Auto Parts team is focused on cutting into the once dominating lead held by Andy Santerre. The remaining events include two super speedways, two short tracks and a road course. Moore and his team are reaching their competitive peak at just the right time of the season.
"There is a lot of racing left in the season, and were going to each and every event with the same focus," said Moore. "Our team is working extremely hard at the race shop and with that we've been better prepared at the race track as well. We want to continue to focus on being consistent and staying out of trouble and make this a close battle for the title."
The Busch North Series will visit the Thunder Road International Speedbowl on August 30 for a 150-lap race on the infamous ¼ mile track in Northern Vermont.
