Bill Penfold's Top Five Beech Ridge Run Ends Early

Yarmouth, Maine's Bill Penfold came to Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, enjoying the best start of his five-year NASCAR Busch North Series career. Entering the race eighth in points, Penfold was confident after practice that his VIP Charter Coach Chevrolet was a possible contender for the win.

Penfold did not get the opportunity to qualify his car for the race, as rain forced the cancellation of time trials. With the field set by points standings, Penfold was set to start eighth.

Shortly after the start of the race, Penfold was up to second place and even led a lap on a lap 17 restart. He dropped back to third shortly afterward, letting the leader set the pace, when mechanical problems struck for the first time this season. Smoke came from the back of the car and Penfold drove directly behind the wall, where he retired his car with a broken rear end.

"It didn't give any warning," he said after the race. "The rear end exploded. It basically blew the bottom half of the rear end right off. It's a shame, we had a real good race car.

"I had fallen back, figuring I'd just ride for a while because I knew [Mike] Johnson's tires were going to burn up the way he was running. Kelly [Moore] and those guys couldn't catch me, so I figured I'd just ride, and as soon as Johnson burns his tires off I'll go right by him, and it would have worked but the car didn't stay together. We'll have to try next week, that's all."

Penfold was especially disappointed because he felt that this was the best handling Busch North car he's ever had at this track. On the bright side, the Busch North Series makes two more visits to Beech Ridge this year.

The team now sets its sights on next week's race, a 150-lap affair at Star Speedway in Epping, New Hampshire. Last year, Penfold finished in the top ten at Star after qualifying third-fastest, despite an early spin.
