Dale Quarterley, who drives the Land O Lakes Chevrolet on the NASCAR Busch North Series circuit, recorded his fourth top ten finish out of six races run in 2001 when he took eighth place in the Star 150 at Epping, New Hampshire's Star Speedway.

Quarterley encountered some difficulty in pre-qualifying inspection when the car was judged to be too low, and was penalized one of his two qualifying laps as a result. He made the best of his one lap, though, and put his car solidly in the show in ninth place.

"Twice now we've come to the racetrack and the car's been too low in tech," he said after qualifying, "and we haven't been able to figure out what we're doing to get it that way. We just went through tech and it was too low in the left front. They sent us around to fix it, but we're in dirt, mud, gravel, stone, and a little piece of asphalt that was paved 52 years ago. So how do you fix it? There's nothing to measure from to decide how to fix it. We guessed on fixing it, and we barely got up there to make it to be the last one to qualify.

"I basically had in my mind that we were not going to do second-round qualifying," Quarterley continued. "I rolled out there and hammered the thing to the point where I almost spun it out in turn two, hammered the thing the first three turns, and then mellowed out to do my one lap. I came off of four nice and smooth and put one nice smooth lap together, and it ended up ninth."

In the race, Quarterley came to fourth place quickly, but an accident in front of him on lap 70 found him bumping into a car that had spun, and forced him to pit to check on the damage. Coming out of the pits in 16th, Quarterley made his way back to the top ten with less than 50 laps to go. Despite late yellows reducing the number of laps available for racing, Quarterley made up more spots and was eighth by the checkers.

"We were going around [Dave] Dion and I just about had him cleared," he said after the race, "inking my way inch by inch, I just about had him cleared and he turned up a little, punted me going down the back straightaway and pushed me over the embankment, where I just about lost it. I lost four spots and got two of them back.

"Later on, guys up there spun out and, trying to avoid them, I touched them and bent up the nose a little," Quarterley continued. "I went to the pit to make sure it was all right and after coming out I came back through. I was going by fifth again and got punted and came back and went up again. Everybody's really helping out at home and the crew guys are really motivated at this point and they're all excited. We're just plain having fun as the program's coming together."

Quarterley now turns his attention to Friday night's race at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut.
