New Hardware Makes Don Wagner Optimistic About Next Two Busch North Races
(Dover, N.J. - September 13, 2004) - James Pritchard Motorsports has geared up for its two final NASCAR Grand National Division races of the 2004 season in a big way, with the team acquiring a new car for driver Don Wagner's first series appearances at New Hampshire International Speedway (Sept. 18) and Dover International Speedway (Sept. 24), both one-mile superspeedways.
The car, purchased from Parks-Schaefer Motorsports, helped carry Greg Schaefer to the series' Most Improved Driver award in the 2002 season. Wagner's team dropped its freshened Horsepower Engineering motor into it and shook it down at Mahoning Valley Raceway this past Saturday afternoon.
"We're excited about having a new car to work with," Wagner said. "We shook it down at Mahoning Valley Raceway and while there's not much of a comparison between Mahoning Valley and Loudon, the overall feel of the car is great. Everything worked and there were no leaks. Nothing fell off of it so we're excited."
While Wagner will make his first Busch North laps on the Loudon, New Hampshire "Magic Mile" with the start of practice on Thursday morning, he does have laps there in another division.
"I've practiced at Loudon with my Modified several years ago, but I've never raced there," he said. "This'll be my first competitive race at Loudon. The car feels good enough that we should be able to get into the show in good shape."
Wagner, who has big-track experience from racing in the now-defunct NASCAR Sportsman Division in the mid-1990s, has never run on Dover's concrete high banks, but will look to draw on his Sportsman experience to get up to speed there.
"The last big track I've been on was Charlotte Motor Speedway, a mile and a half track, racing in the old Sportsman division," he explained. "I don't know if there's any similarities between Charlotte and Dover, maybe in turn four, but it should be fun anyway. I can't wait."
Driving the No. 41 Mannings USA Chevrolet, Wagner has run in four Busch North races so far in 2004, with a best finish of eleventh scored in the first race of the year at Lee USA Speedway. With the running of New Hampshire and Dover, he'll have completed six races this year, the maximum number he's allowed to run while still keeping his eligibility to run for Rookie of the Year in a future season.
