MBNA E-Commerce 150, Dover Downs Intl Speedway, Friday, Sept. 21

Rarely has the green-white-checker finish rule played as decisive a role as it did at Dover Downs. Had the race finished under yellow after the lap 148 caution flag, none of the top six positions would have been the same. Dale Quarterley's misfortune denied him the opportunity to equal Mike Olsen's feat from this spring by winning his first two Busch North Series races consecutively.

Dale Shaw is, of course, a master car builder, and usually he races what he sells. His Dover victory, however, was scored with a Hess chassis he bought this spring at the dispersal of Bobby Hillin's Busch Series team inventory. Shaw said in his post-race interview it was his first win since 1995 in anything other than a Dale Shaw Race Cars product.

Shaw acknowledged set-up assistance from the Busch Series, Grand National Division Phoenix Racing #1 team, but his own crew pitted the car. The tire change rule permitted four tires in any position, and Shaw changed right sides twice while going the distance on the same left side tires.

Bryan Wall's second place was best oval-track finish of the year. It matched his road course second at Watkins Glen, and it came on his first wedding anniversary.

* * *

Dennis Demers' third place matched his best finish of the season, from Waterford in June, and also tied his best superspeedway result, set at New Hampshire International Speedway in September 1996.

* * *

Herb Drugg notched his first top-10 finish of the season, and both Travis Benjamin's 11th and John Cerbone's 17th were career bests.

* * *

Mike Olsen had a dismal weekend, but he continues to lead a charmed life in the Busch North Series point race. Olsen's season-worst 18th place lost only 15 points to Kelly Moore, who was 13th, and Olsen gained 24 points on Mike Johnson, who limped home 26th. Dale Shaw is the charger in the point race, now third after being out of the top ten dozen races ago. The point race possibilities will be detailed in the Stafford Fall Final advance release on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Paul Richardson skipped the Dover event, leaving 17 drivers who have started all 18 races. Carey Heathb was also absent, meaning 18 teams have attempted to qualify for every race (Benjamin had two early-season DNQ's, but has attempted all of them.)

* * *

None of the top three drivers in points entering the MBNA E-Commerce 150 finished the race in the top 12.
