Bill Penfold's Holland Speedway race results in seventeenth place finish.
The annual trip to western New York state, where Holland Speedway is located, found Bill Penfold's VIP Charter Coach-sponsored Penfold Motorsports team, still campaigning its back-up short track car while the car damaged at Beech Ridge undergoes repairs, looking to improve upon its thirteenth place finish from 2001. Penfold was well on his way to beating this result, but a late-race spin and an ill-handling car left him seventeenth when the checkers fell after 150 laps.
The seventh race of the NASCAR Busch North Series started out with qualifying held in Saturday's early evening, where Penfold turned a best time trial lap of 14.580 seconds around the 3/8-mile oval, giving him the fourteenth place starting position.
"We didn't expect to do that well," he said afterwards. "I was arguing with the crew chief about what to do but after this, I know he knows what he's doing, and I'll just drive the car. We just have to stay out of trouble and be there at the end. We were running like we did at Seekonk, so I think we have a real good chance with this one. This is an old car, but we made a lot of changes to the car after Stafford, and it's working real well today."
On a hot night, Penfold started the race strongly and as the race approached the halfway mark, he was within striking distance of the top ten. Even with a loose car, he made it up to eighth place with forty laps to go. A bump with Greg Schaefer shuffled Penfold out of the top ten, and as he tried to come back, another car ran into him and sent him spinning into the backstretch wall. Penfold pitted to make repairs, but was now a lap down and had to soldier on to finish seventeenth, a finish that did not reflect how well the team was performing even with older equipment.
"We loosened up the car for the race, the same way we did at Stafford, and the car didn't handle well at all," Penfold said after the race. "I couldn't get on the throttle, and you can't do anything when that's happening. We loosened the car up thinking the track was going to tighten up, but instead, it got looser and burned up the right rear."
Penfold was having a good race before being spun by another competitor.
"I race guys clean on the outside, giving them plenty of room, and you got guys just running into you," he said. "The 16 car dumped me. He came up, hit me three or four times, couldn't get by me, and he took me out. I've raced him too clean too long for him to take me out, and I don't like it. NASCAR has to call these things, and they're not, and you see what's happening in these races, everybody's beating and banging. Either the NASCAR officials have to call it or they'll have a bunch of cars junked putting on a bad show. It's not racing."
"On the plus side, we finished," he continued. "I took another hit in the points, but we'll just keep battling. Hopefully we can get the other car done soon, because this old one's hurting us."
Penfold currently rides eight in the Busch North Series points standings heading into the next race at the Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, Connecticut. For more information on the team, visit its website at http://www.penfoldmotorsports.com.
