Joey McCarthy Takes Eighteenth Place at Beech Ridge

Joey McCarthy, driving the #41 Mannings USA Chevrolet on the NASCAR Busch North Series, came to Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine for the second time this season for the running of the Irving Oil 150. McCarthy scored a 20th place finish in the earlier stop at the Scarborough, Maine third-mile oval in June, and improved his performance by two places on Saturday night.

The McCarthy/Pritchard Motorsports team was encouraged by their performance in afternoon practice and set the car up for qualifying. After turning in a lap that was good for the 19th starting spot, McCarthy was a little disappointed.

"The track got loose," he said. "Everybody else was tight in practice and we were one of the better cars because we weren't tight. The track just changed and I couldn't get any grip. Now I think the track's supposed to tighten up at night. It's going to be a guess on setup, hopefully I won't go the wrong way. I think we could have qualified in the top ten today easy, but it's disappointing."

McCarthy started the Irving Oil 150 on a strong note, quickly moving up positions but shortly afterwards gave them up and struggled to keep the Mannings USA Chevrolet on the lead lap. He had been passed by the leaders, but made that lap back up when they came in for pit stops and McCarthy took the ensuing restart at the front of the field, at the tail end of the lead lap. He continued racing those on his lap through the rest of the race, winding up eighteenth at the checkers.

"It was kind of like the same old story, but a different week, with the car," he said after the race. "It was good for the first 15-20 laps, and we passed a bunch of cars, but then it went away. It got way too tight. The whole night-to-day thing had me baffled from the beginning. There was a big difference from practice to qualifying."

McCarthy expects to have the consultant who worked with him at Waterford back with the team in the coming weeks.

"I just have to get somebody back here to help me," he said. "It worked last week, but it kind of got away from ourselves today. We weren't bad, we were actually fast but it got away from us somewhere. We've got to keep working at it until we get it again."

The team now looks forward to next weekend's Pepsi Racing 150 at Connecticut's Thompson Speedway. The track has been repaved since last year, and is expected to be fast and exciting.
