Santerre Scores Top-Ten on Road Course
Harrisburg, North Carolina - Andy Santerre, two-time NASCAR Busch North Series Champion and driver of the #6 Bessey Motorsports, Aubuchon Hardware/Castle Chemical Chevrolet, finished 6th in the NASCAR Busch North 200 at the Lime Rock Park road course in Lakeville, CT on Saturday, May 29, 2004.
A rainy and wet Friday rained out qualifying and forced NASCAR to set the field based on the final 2003 point standings. Since Santerre is the defending series Champion, he won the pole position for the 82-lap event.
One practice was squeezed into the schedule late in the afternoon once the track was dry. Santerre was 12th on the sheet.
"I knew my car wasn't blistering fast heading into the event.," Santerre commented. "I never really got a clean lap during practice and ended up farther back on the speed sheet than I thought we were. I was confident we had a top-5 car in race conditions."
Santerre led the field to the green, but surrendered the lead on the first lap.
"For whatever reason, my car took a few laps to come around and gain speed," said Santerre, a Cherryfield, Maine native. 'I knew that so I went ahead and gave up the lead to settle in and wait for the car to come in."
After an early gas-only pit stop at lap 14, Santerre fell out of the top-5, coming back on track in the 8th position. He spent the rest of the caution-filled event racing back toward the top-5, finishing 6th in the event.
"I am content with our finish," the 35-year old Santerre confirmed. "I knew we weren't the best, but I hoped pit strategy and patience would pay off." Santerre adds, "The car took a few laps to come in and we'll address that problem prior to the Glen, but overall, we came out of the race unscathed with no equipment failure so we'll take the top-10 and head back home."
Santerre and his crew have their work cut out for them this off week as they try to repair and prepare the car named Faith for the Budweiser 150 at Seekonk Speedway on June 12, 2004.
"We got wrecked at Thompson going for the lead and lost the front end on the car," Santerre explained. "We have to buckle down and get the car repaired and ready for Seekonk." Santerre continues, "We have other cars we can take, but I love the feel and handling of Faith and it is worth our time and effort to get her back race ready."
