Anthony DeMonte Foiled By Setup Problems, Debris On Lime Rock's Track
(Lime Rock, Conn. - Oct. 1, 2005) - While Lime Rock Park is considered to be the home track of Anthony DeMonte, the 1.53-mile road course in northwest Connecticut being where the Hauppauge, N.Y. driver did most of his road racing before turning to oval tracks. But while he had familiarity with the track on his side, a bad set of shocks meant most of Friday's practice was chasing a car that wasn't cooperating. This left the Auto Art/Long Island Business Solutions No. 38 NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series team taking the green on Saturday with an unknown setup. Things did not improve in the race, as contact with debris and a spinning car damaged the nose of the car, and DeMonte was forced to retire from the event after 72 laps.
The handling of the car was not to the team's liking when it first took to the track on Friday, and the team spent the practice sessions adjusting on the car not knowing the shock absorbers were bad. This was not discovered until after all on-track activity was done for the day.
"We got the shocks on the dyno last night and realized that they were all wrong, but by that time we had adjusted on the car so much, we couldn't go back," he said. "We changed the car around a lot on race morning, but not having any practice before going to race, we didn't really know what we had."
DeMonte's race got off to a rocky start when cars ahead of him tangled on the opening lap and littered the track with debris.
"I ran over some debris, and that knocked the alignment off and the toe-out all off," DeMonte said. "I don't know what it was but it messed the suspension up pretty bad. I was just holding on to it for the rest of the day."
DeMonte's problems were not through as he encountered a car that had spun and ran out of room to sneak by.
"It was spun out to the left, and somebody with a yellow and red car was blocking the other side of the road so I just had a narrow path to get by, and I wound up clipping his right rear with my right front. I got at least two wheels off the ground, if not all four," he said after the race.
After a trying day at the track, DeMonte was forced to retire due to a broken radiator after completing 72 laps.
"We came here this morning and just started going all over the car. We even changed the steering box and when you change that much stuff, you don't know what you're going out there with. It's too bad because we were really looking forward to this race," he said.
DeMonte will complete the 2005 Busch North season at Thompson International Speedway. The event was originally scheduled to run in June but was postponed due to rain that fell just before qualifying. The 100-lap feature is at the conclusion of a one-day event on Saturday, October 8th.
