Ryan Seaman Twelfth In Motor Mile Debut

(Radford, Va. - Aug. 20, 2005) - When Ryan Seaman completed his Rookie Of The Year season in NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series competition, he thought the time of having to learn new tracks would slow down. This would not be the case as Seaman and the rest of the series visited Motor Mile Speedway for the first time ever. He handled the Radford, Virginia track well in his first trip there, finishing twelfth after employing a no-pit strategy.

Seaman's preparations for the Star Country 150 were cut short as a problem in the rear axle required the unit's changing, something that took up most of the second practice. This left Seaman without the opportunity to finish setting up the car, leaving the team having to take an educated guess at what would be needed for qualifying and the 150-lap race.

"We broke a rear right at the beginning of the second session so we didn't get much time," Seaman said. "We got going pretty decent in the first sessions, but losing that second session hurt. We were close but we had a bunch of things we wanted to try to fine-tune it. But we'll be all right. The car wasn't too bad, we were just off a little bit."

After starting seventeenth, Seaman was already in the top ten forty laps into the race, driving his No. 06 ERS Fleet Repair Chevrolet. His big break came when a number of leaders pitted under a lap 81 caution, moving him all the way to fourth place. Even after the race resumed, he fell to just sixth place and held his ground there for many laps.

Running tenth with thirty laps to go, the final opportunity to pit came as caution flew, but Seaman remained on the track.

"We weren't going to gain anything pitting other than wasting a set of tires," he said. "I didn't want to give up the track position late in the race. We were tenth and there were sixteen cars on the lead lap. I didn't want to get behind those cars we were already ahead with so few laps to go so we stuck to our guns and rode it out to the end."

Seaman wound up finishing twelfth with a car whose handling fell off after the tires heated up.

"What really hurt us was missing that second practice session," he said. "If we had the time to tune on the car in that session we probably would have been in a better situation during the race. We were in a great position to get a strong finish after everyone pitted. We were up to fourth and we ran sixth for quite a few laps. The car wasn't too bad at the start of a run but then it fell off after we got some laps in. Overall I think it was a good points day for us, we finished ahead of some cars that we had to beat."

Moving up a spot in points to twelfth, Seaman is set up for the stretch run late in the season with the last five races on tap. The next race will be a 150-lap event at Oxford (Maine) Plains Speedway, where the series started in 1987, though this will be the first year in many that it has been there. Seaman will be racing there for the first time on Saturday night.

"We have an easy week ahead of us with no bodywork to do, so we'll spend some time getting the car right and load up for Oxford," he said. "It'll be the second week in a row racing on a track I've never seen before, but we're looking forward to running on it."
