NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, BUSCH NORTH SERIES POST-RACE NOTES
TSI Harley-Davidson 150, Stafford Motor Speedway, Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Ryan Moore became the first driver to win a Busch North Series short track race after a pit stop since Andy Santerre in the opener of the 2004 season. Moore pitted on lap 67 and took the lead 56 laps later. The new double-file restart format has made the pit stop for fresh right-side tires a more attractive option, since it moves everyone on the lead lap closer to the leader. The next driver in the results to stop was Mike Stefanik, who finished sixth, so both the stop and no-stop strategies are viable at Stafford.

Had Ted Christopher held off Moore to win, the headline would hve read "From the Wrecker to the Checker". The NDS Motorsports/Recycle America Chevrolet was the last of 32 entries to arrive at Stafford, and it did so behind a tow truck after hauler trouble on the way from Vermont. The arrival was almost incognito, as the team was using the rig whch normally carries Phil Scott's late model. TC's Busch North car and Scott's machine are maintained at the same shop in Montpelier, Vt. The regular NDS big rig was on loan to Travis Kvapil's NASCAR Busch Series team for the upcoming Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen.

Sean Caisse pounded the front end of Barney McRae's Trik Custom Sleds Chevrolet into the third turn guardrail in practice to miss a spun Dave Dion. The team actually was excused from qualifying in their normal position to complete rebuilding the car. Sean, who was eligible for a provisional, ran at the end of time trials just to see if everything felt right, It felt right enough to qualify 11th, and he went on to finish a solid ninth and again was the top Sunoco Rookie contender.

Matt Kobyluck's chance to sweep the Connecticut portion of the Busch North Series schedule ended before the first lap was complete. He clipped the spinning polesitter Mike Johnson and was in turn hit from behind by Brad Leighton. "It blew up the right front tire and broke the heim joint on the sway bar," he related. The heim joint was fixed behind pit wall at the cost of 13 laps. He returned to action 28th and last, but finished 20th, still 13 laps down. The effort earned an extra 24 points. While not racing anyone for position, he wasn't hanging around for those last 120+ laps, as he was credited with the fastest lap of the race in a torn-up car.
Kobyluck dropped from second, seven points out of the series lead, to third, 54 points back.

Another top runner with a tough night at Stafford was Joey McCarthy, who was involved with Jerry Marquis, Brad Leighton, and Mike Johnson on lap 83 in turn two. "We bent it up pretty good," he admitted, adding like a true racer, "We'll patch it up for next week." McCarthy dropped out of the top ten in the standings due to the mishap.

No driver entered or dropped out of the top 15 places in the standings, which guarantees an invitation to the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway in November. The 15th and last spot continues to be hotly contested, with John Salemi holding a six-point lead over Scott Bouley and Dale Shaw only 11 points from a ticket to California.

Race sponsor TSI Harley-Davidson, the oldest Harley dealer in Connecticut, also served as primary sponsor for Charles Lewandoski, who was back in his own car after crashing at Waterford and borrowing a Buzz Chew Motorsports team car to start at Adirondack.

Milestones... Charles Lewandoski (12th) and Scott Bouley (13th) matched their career best finishes... Kip Stockwell made it two top-tens in one year for the first time since 2001... Ted Christopher's third place left him batting 1.000 in top-fives. His only other start was a fourth in the opener at Stafford.... Equaling best finishes of 2005 were Brian Hoar (2nd), Stockwell (10th), Don Wagner (14th), and obviously winner Moore... Mike Johnson lost his clean sheet of top-tens; leaving only Stefanik ad Santerre in that category... Ryan Seaman has finished 11th three times, the same frequency as Mike Olsen's seventh places.
