Three consecutive sixth place finishes for Dale Quarterley after Thompson.

Dale Quarterley is the model of consistency on the NASCAR Busch North Series after scoring his third consecutive sixth place finish Saturday night at Thompson International Speedway. Quarterley, who has scored six top tens so far this year driving his Land O Lakes Chevrolet, now rides seventh in series points.

Despite having qualifying problems in recent weeks, Quarterley turned that around at Thompson and put up the second fastest lap in time trials with a lap of 20.234 seconds (111.199 MPH). In the traditional redraw of top qualifiers, Quarterley drew the sixth starting spot.

"Things are going good," he said. "We missed some practice at the beginning because the battery went dead. I think when it went away, it took the alternator with it because we checked it in the morning and it was charging, and then all of a sudden it was dead and the alternator went dead right after it. We lost about half of the first round of practice just messing with that.

"When we got out there, we actually were pretty good right off the truck," Quarterley continued. "We spent the practice session trying to find the happy medium between not too tight and not too loose. We were pretty close because we qualified second. We actually made an adjustment to go qualify and we went by it a little."

Quarterley was quickly up to third in the race's early laps, but on a lap 15 restart was shuffled back to fifth. Falling back to sixth briefly, he was back in the top five as the race crossed the one-third distance mark.

Caution on lap 84 brought the field to pit road, but Quarterley wasn't going to pit. A brake problem, though, discovered as the field slowed to pit brought the Land O Lakes Chevrolet in for service.

"We didn't really plan on pitting but suddenly guys stopped in front of me and I had no brakes," Quarterley said. "So we whipped down pit road and the brakes worked enough to get it stopped in the pit box. One of the lines had cracked loose, if we had gone one more lap we would have stuck it in the fence because there was nothing there. The guys got the line tight, got the wheel back on and I beat the signboard guy at the end to keep from losing a lap."

Restarting from the tail of the field, Quarterley had fifty laps to get back to the front. He made quick work of this task, and was sitting seventh with thirty to go, and racing Dennis Demers for sixth. He was turned away by Demers on that pass attempt, but took the spot for good on the final restart of the race, on lap 137. For the balance of the race, Quarterley held sixth and brought the car home with almost no damage.

"We had to come from last all the way back up to finish sixth, so we're happy for the night," he said. "It's another decent point night. Some of the guys in front of me in points were behind me in the race, so things are looking all right.

"For the amount of abuse tonight, I only have one little dent in the front fender and that was from trying to get by someone, trying to make him let me get by. I'm amazed seeing how many cars are tore up tonight."

Quarterley will now turn his attention to his speedway car, which will be used next Saturday at New Hampshire International Speedway for a 125-lap event. The race will be held in conjunction with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series.
