Joey McCarthy wins Powerade Power Move Of The Race at Thunder Road, finishes seventh
Randolph, New Jersey's Joey McCarthy, driver of the No. 22 TrustCompany Bank Chevrolet in the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series, won the Powerade Power Move of the Race award in Saturday night's True Value 150 at the quarter-mile Thunder Road International Speedbowl. The award is given to the driver who makes up the most positions from the start to the finish of each race, and McCarthy earned the award by finishing seventh after starting 21st.
While McCarthy was eighth fastest and ninth fastest in the two afternoon practice sessions, his qualifying run left him a disappointing 21st on the starting field with a fast lap of 13.406 seconds (67.134 MPH).
"I just drove it in too hard and it just got away from me," he said.
The long road to the front began in front of a sellout crowd at the Barre, Vermont track. Seventeenth at the 25-lap mark, he was up to eleventh after the race's first caution, which came out on lap 48. Following the second caution period, he was ninth. With fifth laps to go, he had fought traffic to the point where he was eighth, but the going was tough on the narrow track.
When the leaders tangled with just ten laps to go, McCarthy took advantage to pick up another position to run seventh. Through the balance of the event, he held that spot despite having some formidable challengers behind him, and he finished seventh, his seventh top ten of the season.
"It was a rough race, as I expected," he said after the race. "The car got real tight on us and we were just trying to be careful and creep through the field. We got pretty close to the front, and I think if we were loosened up a little bit more we would have been even better. The guys did a great job giving me a good car after my unfortunate qualifying run. Hopefully this will give us some momentum for the rest of the season and get us out of the funk we've been in. It's good for TrustCompany Bank, good for J.T. Mase MotorSports. I'm just looking forward to the rest of the season. We've got a lot of new equipment to go to these big racetracks with, and I'm really excited."
After a weekend off, the Busch North Series and the TrustCompany Bank Chevrolet team returns to action at the one-mile New Hampshire International Speedway for a 125-lap event to be held on Saturday, September 13th.
