Watkins Glen, N.Y. (August 10, 2000) -- The first day of racing for this weekend's Global Crossing @ The Glen offered few surprises as veterans Ted Christopher and Andy Santerre won the pole positions for their respective races.
Santerre, (No. 44 Whelan/EJP Chevrolet) who is a regular in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division, took the top spot for Saturday's theglen.com 150 presented by Pepsi NASCAR Busch North Series contest. Santerre's lap of 1:15.477 (116.857 mph) crushed Bryan Wall's 1999 record of 1:16.781 (114.872 mph).
"This car will be fast in the race," Santerre said, "I've had some good cars here, but this car is awesome. I always run good here. I combined (with Marsh Racing) earlier this year. I have always run good here and so have they, so we put our notes together. But (defending champion Bryan) Wall has the fastest car. He's the one to beat."
Series points leader Brad Leighton (No. 55 Sheraton Harborside Portsmouth Chevrolet) will start second and Tom Carey Jr. (No. 42 AAA Aircraft Supply Chevrolet) will start third.
Christopher (No. 13 Wynn's Motorsports Chevrolet) captured the pole for Friday's The Glen 125K NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series race with a lap of 1:13. 488 seconds (120.020 mph), missing Mike Stefanik's 1998 record by nearly four tenths of a second. It was Christopher's first pole of the season and the sixth of his career.
Christopher, who is the defending race champion, was pleased with his effort. "I was a little worried because we weren't as fast as I expected to be in practice. There were some guys that were running some better times than we were. It's the same car we went with last year. Hopefully, we'll end up in the same spot (winner's circle) as we did last year."
Christopher will also compete in the theglen.com 150 presented by Pepsi. He will start 5th in that race.
The biggest surprise of the day was the qualifying lap of part time Modified racer Zane Zeiner, (No. 76 Sunside Landscaping Chevrolet) who will start alongside Christopher on the front row. Two-time Watkins Glen winner Tim Connolly (No. 4 Ralston Purina/Tidy Cat Dodge) will start third. Series points leader Jerry Marquis will start 13th.
Tickets are still available for all three days of the Global Crossing @ The Glen. For ticket, camping and additional information, contact the Watkins Glen ticket office at 607-535-3481 or visit www.theglen.com. Tickets are also now available at participating Tops Friendly Markets tickets.com outlets.
