Waterford, CT -- NASCAR Busch North Series veteran Kelly Moore earned his 24th career victory Saturday evening at the Waterford Speedbowl, backing up his victory at the famed short track during the 2002 racing season.
"It feels really good to get that first win," Moore said. "The NAPA team has worked so hard this season and that dedication and focus is paying huge dividends of late."
The Bill Dodge Auto Group Chevrolet Monte Carlo was quick right off the hauler and Moore backed it up with the third fastest time during qualifying.
"I thought we had an excellent chance at the pole, the car was handling so well and we've been getting good power in our engines as well," commented Moore.
The 1995 NASCAR Busch North Series champion knew he had a race car capable of winning the race and his plan on being patient worked to his advantage. The race was slowed by nine caution periods, consuming more then 50 laps.
"There was a lot of action all over the track, we really needed to just play it safe and communicate really well with the spotter," Moore said. "Things happen so quickly on these small tracks, it can take a lot of good cars out."
Ryan Moore, Matt Kobyluck and Mike Olsen were the early race leaders, but each had their own problems during the 150 lap race. Kobyluck was caught up in an early crash, while Ryan Moore and Olsen were victims of tire problems. These events vaulted Moore into the race lead and he led the final 63 laps for his first victory of the season.
"We've got a tremendous amount of support for our race teams, including NAPA Auto Parts, Maine Lubrication Services, Bill Dodge Auto Group and Shell Rotella T," said Moore. "It's always great to get them a victory and even more impressive when the race will be shown to a national audience."
The race within the race is the 2003 points battle and Moore seized the opportunity to take over the second spot again, and closed the gap considerably on point's leader Andy Santerre.
Next on the Busch North Series schedule is a stop in Massachusetts to make up an earlier postponement at Seekonk Speedway. Moore has won at the 'cement palace' previously and is looking forward to tacking on back-to-back wins to his 2003 racing campaign. The 150-lap feature event will take the green flag on Saturday, August 2.
The Waterford 150 race was taped by SPEED Channel and is scheduled for broadcast on Saturday, August 16.
