Ryan Seaman Learns Waterford Speedbowl On The Job; Finishes Seventeenth

(Waterford, Conn. - July 17, 2004) - Ryan Seaman, the leading candidate for the Auto Meter Rookie Of the Year title in the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series, made his first race at Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, Conn. to run Saturday night's Kobyluck Corporations 150. Seaman, a native of Toms River, N.J., had a tough ride at this first visit to the .375-mile track, starting twentieth and finishing seventeenth.

Ninety minutes of practice wasn't enough for the rookie, who had the tough task of simultaneously figuring out both the track and the car's setup. But the laps that he got made for a good start and, after qualifying twentieth, set him up for 150 more laps to learn the track.

"I need more laps on the track and I'll feel a little bit better about it," he said before the race. "We only did a few laps at a time in practice. These short sessions didn't really get us the information we needed because I couldn't get any momentum built up."

Seaman's struggles continued in the race, as he tried improving from his starting spot. He hung on to the lead lap as long as he could, but was put a lap down by the leader near the halfway point of the race. Caution came out just five laps later, locking him in that position.

In efforts to improve his Bruce Camburn Electric/Erbe Carting Chevrolet's handling, Seaman brought the car to pit road for chassis adjustments three times. The last stop seemed to have done the trick, but it was too little too late, and Seaman finished seventeenth.

"We made the wrong call on the setup for the race and started out on the wrong foot," he said. "We adjusted ourselves out of the picture to start the race as the car was just too tight. We only got forty laps of practice, and between me trying to get the hang of the track and our trying to find out how to make the car better, we had an uphill battle from the start. But we learned a lot, and we made a couple pit stops to change the car around a little bit. We kept on getting closer to being in the ballpark, and by the end we were about where we needed to be, running the lap times that we should have. But it was a little too late, there weren't that many laps left and I wasn't going to be going anywhere. I was already two laps down so I just rode it out to the finish."

Next week brings a change for Seaman, as he'll be going to a track that he's actually seen before. New Hampshire International Speedway hosts the next Busch North race, which Seaman has prepared for with a test day three weeks ago.

"I'm looking forward to going to Loudon and having a real good week there," he said. "We got all the bugs out of the car when we ran the test day a couple weeks ago, and we're going there hoping for a nice top ten finish."
