An Unlucky Weekend for Moore
Watkins Glen, NY - The Moore Racing Teams left their hometown of Scarborough, Maine, Wednesday to travel to the Finger Lakes section of New York. Ryan Moore spent Tuesday night with his team loading up his race car and blowing out birthday candles to celebrate his 21st birthday. Moore's birthday wish was, of course, to achieve his first road course victory.
"This track is always very challenging," said Moore, "every race at Watkins Glen is always a learning experience and I'm looking forward to getting some more laps under my belt."
With two severe storms threatening the East Coast, it was doubtful that the race would take place Saturday afternoon. Moore was semi-satisfied with his R.C. Moore/Bill Dodge Auto Group/Shell Rotella T Chevrolet.
"We were a little tight throughout practice," said Moore, "But the team worked together and I felt confident that we had a good strong car."
The Moore Racing Team would like to thank Jeff Opeal of DEI for his engine advice. "It's always a thrill to be competing on the same track as the Nextel guys," admitted Ryan, "we will try to put on our best show."
At the start of the race, Moore fell back to 6th, where he remained until the red flag was thrown on lap 3. A forty minute stop was the result of a wreck amongst several drivers and repairs to a guardrail. The race resumed on lap 9, and Moore's plan for himself was to take it easy at the beginning of the race. The 2003 NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series Rookie of the Year soon began to feel settled in his R.C. Moore Monte Carlo and on lap 13, he passed teammate Kelly Moore.
Three laps later an unexpected disaster occurred for the 74 team.
"Heading into turn one, I was a little too hot," said a disappointed Moore, "I had too much front brake and not enough rear and I locked it up."
Moore went off the course, through the infamous gravel pit and into the wall. "Heading for a wall at 100 MPH is always pretty scary," said Moore, "I'm just lucky that I'm not hurt." The Moore Racing Monte Carlo had severe front end damage and completion of the race was questionable. After a full inspection of damages by the Moore Racing team it was apparent that they would not be able to finish the race.
The team is keeping a positive attitude and is looking forward to being on "home turf" next weekend at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. Moore has fallen back to seventh in the Busch North Series point standings, but still has plenty of time to make his way back to the front.
