Ryan Seaman Tackles Watkins Glen, Gets Seventeenth Place Finish

(Watkins Glen, N.Y. - August 14, 2004) - Auto Meter Rookie Of The Year candidate Ryan Seaman made his first visit to Watkins Glen International's road course and enjoyed a successful weekend at the track, finishing seventeenth and not staring down another marathon week of working on the car to get ready for the next NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series race.

Practice time was curtailed by rain, throwing off the schedule and eliminating the qualifying session. Seaman was given the sixteenth starting position based on his points standings, and he eventually got on the track for practice late in the afternoon. That practice did not go well, as a pair of leaks cost him track time.

With just seven laps on the track, Seaman still had a lot of learning to do after the race started. Despite the lack of track time, he ran in seventeenth despite a number of fast cars from practice starting in the back of the field. He joined the majority of the field in pitting under a lap 23 caution for fuel, and continued to run in the top twenty.

Racing at Watkins Glen can often be adventurous, with few runoff areas and those runoff areas containing gravel traps that don't usually permit those who drive into them to drive out of them. But twice Seaman got out of shape in the first turn and had to keep his foot down to return to the track.

"I drove through the sand traps twice, but fortunately we kept going and never slowed down," he explained. "My car was just way too tight to get down on the inside of someone going into the first turn."

One of those trips through the gravel knocked off the rear end cooler belt and broke some oil fittings as well, but Seaman persevered and was rewarded with the seventeenth place finishing position.

"All things considered, we came out of here all right," he said. "We got out there today and held our own for quite a while. Things went pretty good even though the car was a little bit tight. I had some brake trouble starting around lap twenty or so, I started losing my brakes so it was a handful for a while. But I turned it around, made it to the end and finished seventeenth. There's just a little bit of body damage to fix since I cut a tire right at the start-finish line when the race was over. All things considered, I think we made out all right.

"We finished in one piece, and that was our goal for the day," the Toms River, N.J. driver continued. "We finished seventeenth out of thirty-four, and six of the guys who finished ahead of us were road racers, so we ended up eleventh if you don't count the ringers. It was a good points day for us. Things are looking up. We've got a few more races to go so we'll try to turn up the wick and get into that top fifteen. That's what we're hoping for."
