Sportsman drivers chase Danny Gay at Cajon.
EL CAJON, CA. Danny Gay got off to a rough start at Cajon Speedway this year. But now the 28-year-old racer has become the driver to beat at the 3/8 mile paved oval.
This Saturday night Gay and the remainder of the late model sportsman drivers return to action at the track for round 13 of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge. Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying starts at 5:15 PM. The gates will open and practice will start at 4:00 PM. Admission prices are $10 on the east side and $9 on the west side for adults. Kids ages 6 -- 12 are $3; children under age six are free with a paid adult admission.
Sharing the Gillespie Field pavement with the late models will be the Grand American modifieds, pony stocks, bomber stocks, and legend cars. The night will conclude with the monthly destruction derby. In the modifieds Mike Salm and Scott Brown are tied in the chase for the track championship.
The sportsman had last weekend off, their second respite of the year. But prior to that Gay had made two consecutive visits to victory lane in his Dodge stock car. The double victories have enabled Gay to widen his point lead over John Manke from 10 points to 86. A maximum 97 tallies can be earned on any race night.
Gay finished fourth on opening night two months ago before running into hard times for two races. On April 13 and April 20 he crashed and neither accident was of his making. Combined with the fact that he and his wife Tonya were moving into a new home, Gay had to struggle to get his car race-worthy.
He rebounded on April 27, finishing second to Jeff Wright. Then he could fare no better than third and fourth in the next two outings before he found the gold. Gay is also working on a string of three straight nights as the fast qualifier.
Manke also has a pair of victories this year. He scored back-to-back wins on May 11 and May 18. But then disaster struck on May 25 when he ended up in the backstretch crashwall early in the main event. He rebounded to finish fifth two in the last outing.
Danny Gay and Manke should face added competition this time around. Danny's dad Jerry, the track's second all-time winningest driver with 137 feature wins, should be in the pits this weekend with his Monte Carlo. He won on April 20 but has parked his car since.
Other hopefuls include Jeff Wright, the April 27 victor. Wright is currently third in the points chase. Jeff Seifert has been knocking at the door. He is still seeking his first win, but he has been race runner-up on three different occasions.
