EL CAJON, CA. Things will be a bit tamer than normal this Saturday night when Cajon Speedway hosts round nine of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge. Three divisions, each distinctly different, are on the card this time around.

The NASCAR late model sportsman, the local Grand American modifieds, and the legend cars will invade the 3/8-mile paved oval located next to Gillespie Field. Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs start at 5:00. Gates open and practice starts at 4:00 PM. Admission prices are $10 on the east side and $9 on the west side for adults. Kids ages 6 -- 12 are $3; children under six are free with a paid adult admission.

In addition to the tripleheader, the night will conclude with the second destruction derby of the year. Last month Lyle Driscoll of Lakeside survived the crashfest to win the first place prize money of $400.

The late model sportsman are Cajon's premier division. These are high horsepower, sleek racing machines. The two most popular body styles are Chevrolet Monte Carlos and Dodge Intrepids. The Grand American modifieds are purer racing machines, featuring all sorts of body styles. They may be called Chevys, Fords, or Dodges, but they hardly resemble anything you would see on the street. The cars have no fenders. With their horsepower actually overwhelming the tires allowed on the car, the modified is a division where a lot of finesse is required. A legend car on the other hand is a 5/8 scale fiberglass full-fendered racecar. The body styles resemble those popular at racetracks back in the 1940's and 1950's, when 1930 style Chevy, Dodge, and Ford coupes and sedans were popular. But under the hood of a legend car is a 1250 cc Yamaha motorcycle engine.

A pair of North County drivers have split honors in the first two modified races run at Cajon so far this year. Dean Kuhn of Vista won the opener while Mike Salm of Fallbrook prevailed the last time out. Meanwhile in the legend car events at Cajon, invaders from even further north have been victorious. Jim Smith of Orange won the March race. Brent Jones of Upland came home first in last month's legend contest.

The sportsman division has seen four different winners. A couple of guys from Lakeside, Danny Gay and Ron Overman, have wins as does San Diego's Jeff Wright and Ramona's John Manke.
