Kgb Brings Nextel Cup Stars to Cajon Speedway

EL CAJON, CA (05/01/04). Bill Elliott, Kevin Harvick, and Sterling Marlin are three of the stars of the Nextel Cup series. This Saturday night May 1, those three drivers are scheduled be at Cajon Speedway for the second KGB Dodge Race of Champions presented by the Fun Bike Center.

That trio plus one surprise mystery driver will compete in a special race that will be part of the regular NASCAR Dodge Weekly series event at the 3/8 mile paved oval. The doors open at 4:00 pm and the first 4000 paid admissions will receive a KGB Race of Champions souvenir tee shirt. Advance tickets are available for $15 via the Internet or from MotorSports Direct in Santee. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $20. Kids five years of age and younger will be admitted free with a paid admission.

The regular racing action will include the NASCAR Shortrack Series street stocks along with the open wheeled Grand American modifieds and the bomber stocks. This will be the first race of 2004 for the modifieds; their opener two weeks ago was rained out.

Race time is 6:45 pm. Twenty-five lap features are on tap for the street stocks and modifieds. The bomber stocks will run a 20-lap finale. Those main events will take place after a full night of preliminary events that are used to set the lineup for the big races.

Saturday's KGB Race of Champions will be the first of two consecutive special events at the Gillespie Field track. On May 8, Davey Hamilton brings his Supermodified Racing League to Cajon for their annual visit. The SRL features the fastest short track racecars in the country. The radical looking winged warriors battle through 40 rounds in their feature contest at Cajon.

But first the task at hand is this Saturday night's special. Neither Marlin nor Elliott and maybe even Harvick has ever competed at Cajon. And they will be wheeling stock cars they have never sat in. Still these professionals will have lots to show. A year ago Kenny Schrader, Kenny Wallace, Dave Blaney, and Jimmy Spencer had only about five practice laps on the track before their race. They got dialed in very quickly and were able to turn laps faster than the regular late model sportsman drivers at Cajon after just a few laps. That's probably one of the reasons the Nextel Cup drivers are where they are.

In the regular portion of the card, Eric Ferguson will be gunning for his third consecutive victory in the street stocks. After two races the defending street stock champ finds himself ten digits ahead of 2003 bomber stock titlest Rick Hagen, 148 to 138. Persistent top street stock runner Richard Hinze sits in third with 126. Rounding out the top five are Rob Overman (124) and Neil Rodvold (121).

Bomber stock sophomore David Whisenant was second a week ago in the main event. He took over the point lead from opening night victor Randy Hart with that run. Whisenant is just three digits ahead at this point. Marty Lehrke (118), Scott Denton (103), and Brian Fitzgibbons (95) sit third through fifth. But with a possible 147 points possible any race night and only two races in the books for 2004, no one is yet comfortable with their position in the points chase.

In the modifieds defending champion Mike Jackson will be back. Danny Gay, Mike Salm, Jimmy Dickerson, and Pat Garity should also pose strong runs for honors in 2004 among others. Heading the rookie class will be 2003 pony stock ace Hector Leon. Other rookie contenders include Danny Hildebrand, Mark McGowan, James Scheel, and Jeff Thompson.
