EL CAJON, CA. Scott Brown started competing in the Grand American modified division at Cajon Speedway back in 1999. During his first two years he won a pair of main events.

So far this year the 26-year-old has been unstoppable in the open wheeled class at the 3/8 mile paved oval. He has captured both of the 25-lap main events and will be gunning for number three when the modifieds join the NASCAR Weekly Racing series action Saturday night at the Gillespie Field oval.

Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs will start at 5:15. Hot lapping (also known as practice) kicks things off at 4:00.

All five of Cajon's divisions will be taking to the track Saturday night. That will include the late model sportsman, street stocks, pony stocks, and bomber stocks in addition to the Grand American modifieds. And if that isn't enough for your typical race fan, the night will conclude with a destruction derby.

By virtue of his twin victories, Brown sits atop the modified point standings. He is just ten markers ahead of defending champion Mike Salm, who has finished third in the first two races of the season. Scott Brown's uncle, Ron Brown, sits in third place. The younger Brown has 131 points to Salm's 121 and the elder Brown's 107. Two weeks ago in the last modified event, Ron Brown, the 1991, 92, 93 divisional champ, spent all 25-laps of the main event on his nephew's bumper, but was unable to work his way past. Scott Brown started his career at Cajon in the bomber class back in 1995. He graduated to the street stocks a year later. He spent three years in that class before moving up again in 1999. Last year he ended the season second in the modified standings. Both of his victories came in September near the end of the season. He also had five runner-up finishes and three third place showings in the 19 events contested a year ago.

In the late model sportsman, Mike Mendenhall continues to set the pace after the first quarter of the season. Chasing Mendenhall are a couple of families. Ron Overman and his stepson Todd McLauchlan are second and third in the points. Jerry Gay is fourth while his son Danny, a rookie in the sportsman this year, is fifth.
