EL CAJON, CA. Cajon Speedway is getting ready for its busiest week of the 2001 season. But before the three races in eight days during the week of the Fourth of July, there is another very important race to be held this Saturday night.
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series returns to action on the 3/8 mile paved oval this Saturday. On tap will be the late model sportsman, street stocks, pony stocks, and bomber stocks plus the mini-stockars. Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs start at 5:15 PM. The gates will open at 4:00 when practice starts. For a half hour starting at 5:45 PM, some of the bomber stock drivers will be participating in the weekly autograph session behind the east side grandstands.
The late model sportsman will be running twin 30-lap main events as the drivers pursue point leader Mike Mendenhall. The street stock drivers will chase Rich Green, who regained the point lead last week after losing it the preceding week to Rick Hagen. Ed Hale, the division’s only two time champion, continues his domination of the pony stocks. Bob Wickey paces the bomber stock standings. He was the top point man in the division back in 1988 and 1989. Both the pony and bomber stocks will have 20-lap main events.
The mini-stockars will also run 20-laps.
The Fourth of July celebration will be extended to eight days at the track. There will be the regular weekly shows on Saturday June 30 and Saturday July 7. Sandwiched in-between will be the annual July 4 extravaganza. There will be a 150-lap factory stock enduro that night along with a bus jump, Boat Trailer Race III, and the traditional fireworks. The factory stock enduro will see 75 laps run in one direction; then the cars will turn around and go 75 laps in the opposite direction. Cajon has not hosted an enduro since 1989. The boat trailer race became an immediate crowd favorite after the first one last July 4 and fans have been clamoring for more. Once again there will be two this year; the second one comes on the night of the season finale when that crazy race shares the track with the fastest short track race cars in the country - the supermodifieds.
Points will be on the line in both halves of the twinbill for the sportsman. The double event was scheduled to make up for a rainout earlier this season. Another doubleheader will be held July 21.
