EL CAJON, CA. It has all come down to one night of racing to determine the point winners of three divisions at Cajon Speedway. This Saturday night the 2001 champions will be crowned in the Grand American modified, pony stock, and bomber stock divisions at the 3/8 mile paved oval.
Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs will start at 5:15 PM. Practice for the most important night of the season will start things off at 4:00 PM. Sharing the asphalt will the street stocks where Rich Green has already earned the first place trophy. The factory stocks will also be in action. And if that is not enough racing for one night, the final event of the evening will be the final destruction derby of the season where $1000 will be paid to the winner.
Any driver can earn a maximum 147 points this weekend. The number is 97 for a normal race night, but the finishing points are doubled for the final points race of the season. In addition there are points awarded for passing cars and for qualifying so no one can afford to sit back and take it easy. In the Grand American modifieds, there are still three drivers in the hunt - Mike Salm, Ron Brown, and Scott Brown. Salm won the title a year ago while Ron Brown took home three straight divisional trophies from 1990 through 1992. Scott Brown is his nephew and led the chase most of the season. Ed Hale and Douglas Wright Jr. will settle things in the pony stocks. Hale has raced everything there is at Cajon since he first got behind the wheel of a racecar 39 years ago in 1962. By the time Wright was born in 1973, Hale had already make 36 trips to Cajon's victory lane and pocketed one championship. Hale is Cajon's all-time winningest driver with 146 career victories. Wright is in just his fourth season of competition at Cajon and is pursuing his first title.
The tightest chase all season long has been in the bomber stocks. Here Mark Holland and Bob Wickey have been involved in a torrid, but friendly duel. While Wickey has five victories this season, Holland is winless. Surprisingly if Holland comes home at the top of the points and does not win the main event this weekend, it will mark the third time in the past four seasons that the bomber champion has not captured a main event. That just indicates up the importance of qualifying. At Cajon the faster cars start in the back half of the main event and can pick up lots of points for passing cars.
Following this weekend, only three races will remain on the 2001 schedule. The Coors 100 open competition event for the NASCAR late model sportsman will be run Oct 6. The following Saturday Sid's Auto Body brings back to Cajon the fastest short track race cars in the country. The Supermodified Racing League will be in town for their season finale on Oct 13. The season will conclude with a factory stock enduro on Oct 20.
