EL CAJON, CA. A year ago Gary Tamborelli had a falling out with track officials at Cajon Speedway after a controversial call cost him the 2000 NASCAR late model sportsman stock car championship at the track. This Saturday night, the three-time Cajon champ and reigning Orange Show stock car champion returns to the 3/8-mile paved oval.

The occasion is the annual Coors 100 open competition event, the final late model sportsman race of the year at the Gillespie Field track. Race time is 6:45 PM with the 100-lap finale topping the card. Sharing the pavement will be the Ultra Wheels Super Trucks. That group will be making their only San Diego County appearance of the season.

Tamborelli raced at Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino this year and won six times in 18 starts en route to his championship. He finished every main event in the top five to claim honors at the ¼ mile oval.

A giant purse is on the line for the drivers this weekend. First prize money is $2500 with the runner-up earning $1500 and $1000 going to the third place runner. Twenty-four cars could start the marathon grind.

Tamborelli won't be the only "out-of-towner" to take on the local contingent, which will be headed by 2001 Cajon champ Todd McLauchlan. Rookie Jason Allen has told track officials he will be bringing his championship team from Las Vegas Motor Speedway's 3/8 mile paved oval to make an assault. Joining him in the trek from the gambling capital will be crowd favorite Chuck Trickle. Another hopeful will be former Orange Show titlest Roger Brown of Corona. In addition 2001 Irwindale Speedway titlest Greg Voigt is expected to be in the Coors field.

McLauchlan though could be tough to beat. He had a banner season this year, winning three main events and finishing every race in the top ten. In addition he captured last year's Coors contest.

Taking up the charge against the 38-year-old McLauchlan and the invaders will be a host of Cajon regulars. Ron Overman, McLauchlan's stepfather and a veteran of more than 25-years of competition, finished second in the season long standings this year and will be trying to win his first marathon grind at Cajon. Another favorite will be Mike Mendenhall, third this year at the track; he won five features during the year and paced most of last year's Coors event until he ran out of gas in the final ten rounds.

Following this weekend's action, only two events remain on the schedule of Cajon Speedway's 40th season. The Supermodified Racing League hosts their season finale here on October 13. They will be joined by the local Grand American modifieds. A 150-lap factory stock enduro will ring down the curtain on October 20; that night will conclude with Boat Trailer Race IV.
