Firefighters crash at Cajon
EL CAJON, CA (06/08/02). Firefighters and fire trucks from all over San Diego County will converge on Cajon Speedway this Saturday night to crash and have some fun. It is the night for the annual Firefighters' Destruction Derby at the 3/8 mile paved oval.
That crazy event will take place following the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge stock car action. Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying starts at 5:15 PM. The gates will open and practice will start at 4:00 PM.
Admission prices are $10 on the east side and $9 on the west side for adults. Kids ages 6 -- 12 are $3; children under age six are free with a paid adult admission.
The evening will begin with a parade of fire trucks around the Gillespie Field oval. It will conclude with the frivolous. But the real purpose for the firefighters showing up at the track is very serious. The event is one of the annual fundraisers for the Burn Institute. Each fire department that enters a car in the derby has obtained sponsorship for their car. That money, along with the proceeds from the sale of souvenir shirts and the contributions made by fans who help "Fill the Boot" will all be donated to the Burn Institute.
The Burn Institute is a local non-profit health agency dedicated to reducing the number of burn injuries and deaths in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The Burn Institute was formed in 1972.
There are usually about 15 to 20 entrants in this derby. Last year Forrest Kuhn of the Lakeside Fire Department won the crashfest where the last car running id declared the victory. Mark Scott will represent the Cajon Speedway Fire and Rescue Crew for the fifth consecutive year. "It's really just about bragging rights," Scott says of the derby. "You don' t have a strategy (when you get out there. It's just hit as often as you can and as hard as you can. It's a free-for-all."
Ironically Scott will be competing in a car that was originally a California Department of Forestry Firefighters car. Sid Rodriguez, owner of Sid's Auto Body, donated the machine.
The stock car portion of the card will include street stocks, pony stocks, bomber stocks, factory stocks, and Allison Legacy cars.
