CHRISTOPHER RETURNS, LOOKING FOR WIN IN NASCAR WHELEN SOUTHERN MODIFIED TOUR SEASON OPENER AT CARAWAY SPEEDWAY

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 21, 2006) -- Ted Christopher is hoping to pull off a repeat performance this Saturday night at Caraway Speedway, like he did one year ago in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season-opener by scoring the victory.

"I'm really looking forward to Caraway this Saturday night," says Christopher, of Plainville, Conn. "To be able to say I won the first NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race is pretty special to me, and I'd really like to be able to say I won the first race of the season two years in a row. I know I've got a good car heading into the race so I'm really looking forward to Saturday night. I've always seemed to run real well at Caraway for some reason."

Christopher says that the track conditions at the .455-mile oval seem to favor his driving style.

"Caraway is a very unique race track," Christopher explains. "I almost won at Caraway the first time I ever raced there several years ago. I like it because it's real fast on the back straightaway and it kind of lets the cars sweep out and have the chance to pass. It's a nice track even though it is a little tight getting off the fourth turn, but I guess that's just one of the little intricacies that make the place so unique. I think knowing those little characteristics of the track is what helps me run so strong every time we go to Caraway."

Even though Christopher competes on the Whelen Modified Tour in the northeastern part of the country, he says the Whelen Southern Modified Tour continues to grow by leaps and bounds since becoming sanctioned by NASCAR.

"I've talked to a lot of people who have said that it has helped them out as far as knowing they have a good sponsor that's going to be there for them," Christopher says. "With NASCAR's involvement with the Modified Tour in the Southeast, it's bringing this type of racing in the area to another level."

Christopher started last year's race from the 21st position, dodging six caution flags that slowed the race for 27 laps before his No. 79 Pontiac took the lead from Jay Hedgecock and never looked back to the nearly $2,000 payday.

Naturally, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour regulars don't like seeing strangers come in and take away their limelight.

"There are several of those guys that don't like me a whole lot," Christopher says with a laugh.

One driver that Christopher will have to deal with is Burt Myers, who won the second race of the 2005 Whelen Southern Modified Tour season at Caraway en route to a second-place finish in the final championship standings.

"We're excited and looking forward to getting the season started off Saturday night at Caraway," Myers says. "When somebody like Ted Christopher comes to race with you, that's somebody you're going to have to keep an eye on. Not to take anything away from him and what he's accomplished, but when I see him in my rearview mirror I think of him as just another car. It's kind of a love-hate relationship that's hard to explain. It's just like in basketball where the top player wants the ball in his hands. I love the competition."
