CHARLOTTE, NC (May 20, 2003) - It wasn't exactly as Jay Godley had planned, but the outcome reflects a driver's determination, tenacity, backed by a solid race team led by veteran Crew Chief Richard Broome.

The #18 Pontiac race team arrived at Lowe's Motor Speedway last Friday with all of the usual expectations that are a result of preparation and the fever of a competitive spirit.

The team found quickly found themselves behind the eight ball when their engine laid down during the first practice session. "The engine problem caused us to lose some valuable time on the track," states Godley. The team went to work and completed a quick engine change in time to take their turn in qualifying.

Struggles continued in qualifying. Godley could only muster a 29th place starting position. They went back to work on the car and changed the gearing. He looked good in happy hour and felt a lot better about the car.

Godley made a pit stop during the first caution and then battled with the back of the pack for the middle stages of the race. By lap 30 he was in 17th place. He was able to miss a last lap accident involving several car earning him a 12th place finish.

In the last two events, Godley has shown how he and his team can overcome adversity, by making adjustments and staying up on the wheel.

He finished second to T.J. Majors for the Rookie of the Race honors. Godley safely maintained his position in the standings, just 3 points out of first place for Rookie of the Year.

The next stop is Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway on Saturday, June 14, 2003. Last year Godley ran extremely well at SoBo. He was able to lead the race and ran in the top 5 most of the event, until mechanical problems sidelined him.

He heads to South Boston with a lot more experience than he had last year. If he can find just a pinch of racing luck, he could find himself in victory lane for his first career win.
