McClure gears up with Dixie Pottery

Eric McClure, a 23-year-old Va.-resident, begins the 2002 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series with a new sponsor. McClure, son of Jerry McClure, an owner of Morgan-McClure Motorsports and spotter for Mike Skinner, starts his sophomore season with Dixie Pottery. His associate sponsors of Morgan-McClure Chevrolet, 77sports.com and Duke's Printing stayed on board for another year.

McClure, who has grown up in the shadows of his family's NASCAR Winston Cup Series race team, has aspirations of working his way up through the ranks to maybe one day drive for his Dad and Uncles. No stranger to the familiar No. 4, which has seen victory lane 14 times in the Winston Cup series under the guidance of Morgan-McClure, McClure has begun a tradition of his own by visiting victory lane with the same car number in the Weekly Racing Series.

Born in Bristol, Va., McClure is happy to pick up a Nationwide sponsor with hometown heritage. "We're really excited to sign on Dixie Pottery to sponsor us in the Weekly Racing Series," McClure said. "It's a big opportunity for us. Dixie Pottery is a famous company and we hope to represent them proud."

The company, headquartered in Abingdon, Va., will sponsor the No. 4 car, in hopes of gaining a NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Championship at Lonesome Pine International Raceway. "Last year was kind of an up and down year for our team," McClure commented. "We led the points at Lonesome Pines Raceway until the track was closed, then we struggled at New River Valley. We hope a new car and a new sponsor will give us what we need to run for the championship."

McClure, who parked in victory lane for the first time last year in the NASCAR division, looks toward growing and improving as a race team this season. With the addition of new people, working toward being a competitive team each week is top priority. During off weeks at Lonesome Pine Raceway, the team will travel to other venues to gain experience and seat time.

"I hope running at extra tracks will prepare us for a step up later. If everything falls into place, we might work out a deal to run several races toward the end of the season in a higher division," McClure stated. Under the watchful eye of his Dad, who also serves as spotter for his son, McClure seems to be on the right track for carrying on a family tradition. He hopes to add to the winning record of Morgan-McClure Motorsports one day in the elite Winston Cup Series.
