Dale Quarterley Takes Titech Chevrolet To Nineteenth At Dover

Dover, Del. (Sept. 19, 2008) - Dale Quarterley made only his second NASCAR Camping World East Series start of the season Friday afternoon when he raced in Dover International Speedway's Sunoco 150. His Titech-sponsored No. 32 Chevrolet was fast, but a mistake on pit road found himself handed a four-lap penalty by NASCAR. He stayed on the track to put on a show for his sponsors, finishing nineteenth.

Quarterley, who last raced at Lime Rock Park in August, returned to competition at Dover, where he won this race in 2004. Despite having only made one start in the last year and a half, the Westfield, Mass. driver was quickly up to speed, posting top-five practice times on Thursday. Qualifying was a different story, though, as he was only nineteenth-fastest.

"We were good all day in practice, but the second we taped it up, we were a little more on the free side than I thought we were going to be," he explained. "I tried to rail it into one and it didn't like that. It ruined that lap and that's why we weren't that great in qualifying. We should be better in the race."

In just fifteen laps, Quarterley had improved to fourteenth but he thought something was amiss. Thinking he had a flat tire, he came to pit road under caution on lap 21, putting on a pair of tires he ran in practice. It turned out that the tire he thought was flat was still at full pressure, and because of that and the fact that he had used two of what are considered "emergency" tires rather than new tires, NASCAR determined that his stop was an unapproved tire change. Since two tires were changed, the penalty was for him to come onto pit road and be held for four laps.

"That was my fault," Quarterley admitted. "I thought I had a flat tire, but I didn't. NASCAR said that the change wasn't allowed. They held me for four laps, and I lost another one because I had to come in and serve the penalty under green. I came back out and I was five laps down, and I passed everybody. The car was that good."

Rather than retire with little to gain by staying on the track, Quarterley ran to the finish.

"I stayed out because we had Titech on board as a sponsor, and they had 75 people here in the stands," he said. "I wanted to call it a day because there was no way we were going to get all those laps back, but I stayed out there to show those guys how good we could have been, and they saw their car out there passing people all race long. We couldn't have gotten a good finish, but we could put on a good show for them."
