Jeff Anton Struggles Through Iowa Event, Finishes 31st
Newton, Iowa (May 18, 2008) - Jeff Anton was really looking forward to the second annual NASCAR Camping World Series combination race that pitted competitors from the East Series with those from its West Series at Iowa Speedway. In last year's race, he qualified seventh and finished eighth, the third best among East Series drivers. In the 2008 edition, Anton struggled with his No. 30 Engineered Floors, Inc. Chevrolet and never got the handle on the car, and he left the track with a disappointing 31st place finish.
"We took a new car here and obviously we've missed the setup with it since we've been struggling with it all weekend," he said. "Last year, we weren't that fast in practice but I knew when we got to qualifying, we'd be fast. That's not the case this time around. The car is not under me the whole time around the racetrack. We'd change one thing and one end of the car would get better at the expense of everything else. We tried tightening it up but then we'd lose the nose."
Anton started the race from the rear of the field after being forced to take a provisional starting position and hoped for the best.
"In practice the car's proven that it goes faster the longer we run it, so it should get better as the race goes on," he said.
The Russell, Massachusetts driver continued trying to improve the car during the course of the U.S. Cellular 200. During the course of the event, he made pit stops under almost every opportunity available to tweak the setup in hopes of striking a combination that would allow his car to become more competitive. Nothing really helped, though, and Anton made sure he stayed out of trouble on his way to a 31st place finish.
"I'm exhausted," he said after the race. "Last year I jumped out of the car and I didn't sweat one little bit because the car was so easy to drive. But right now I'm exhausted.
"We were really looking forward to coming here after last year," Anton continued, "but as good as we were then, we went the exact opposite this year. The car just wasn't under us all day no matter what we tried, and we made a lot of adjustments to it all race long. We tried some different shocks to try and soften it up, but we just never got a handle on it. It was a little loose and a little tight, and it's hard to be out there when you know you could be doing way better."
Some consolation can be found in the fact that Anton tested the same car earlier in the week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and he posted very competitive times with it at that mile track that hosts two Camping World East Series races in June and September.
Next on the schedule is a short-track race at South Boston (Virginia) Speedway on Saturday night, May 31. Following that is one of Anton's favorite tracks, the road course at Watkins Glen on June 8. He finished twelfth at South Boston in 2008, and the last time the series ran at Watkins Glen, he made his series debut and finished fifteenth.
