Qualifying Crash Denies Johns, Freedom Is Not Free Dodge Run At Top NASCAR Camping World Finish
NEWTON, IA (May 19, 2008) -- Heading into the U.S. Cellular 200 NASCAR Camping World Series race at Iowa Speedway, Richard Johns was confident his No. 95 Freedom Is Not Free Dodge could contend for a Top-10 finish.
Johns (right) never got a chance to attempt to accomplish that however as a crash prior to Sunday's race quickly dashed his high hopes.
"I rolled off into Turn 1 on my qualifying lap and the car just never turned," said the Sadler-Hamilton Racing driver after the incident. "Something bound up in the steering. It almost felt like the front tires weren't on the ground. It's doubly frustrating because we missed the race and we don't know what happened yet. We'll have to get it up in the air when we get is back to the shop. Maybe that will tell us something."
Johns was one of 58 cars vying for a position in the 44-car Iowa starting field of Camping World East and West Division competitors. Johns ran his best lap of the weekend in the final practice before qualifying Sunday and was poised to make the race when disaster struck.
"We made some changes to the car to make it better in qualifying," said Johns. "With that many quality cars looking to get in the field, we needed a good lap. I don't think I could have done anything else. I drove it down in to the turn the same way I had 50-to-60 laps the two days before in practice. This time, it didn't stick. It just went straight, got up the track and into the wall."
Johns, who finished 13th-place series in his first-ever Camping World start last month at Greenville, was also disappointed for Freedom Is Not Free -- a group that aids families of wounded and deceased American military personnel.
"We were sure hoping to generate some additional awareness for Freedom Is Not Free this weekend," said Johns. "On or off the track, we want people to know Freedom Is Not Free is doing everything they can to help all our wounded veterans, their families, and the families of deceased military veterans. Everyone needs to do whatever they can for these people, especially this week leading up to the weekend and Memorial Day."
