MAYBE 'MAGIC' CAN HELP TURN THINGS AROUND
Only four races into the K&N Pro Series East sea- son, Cole Whitt already has experienced the highs and lows that come with driving in NASCAR.
The newly turned 19-year-old Whitt started the season strong, grabbing the points lead with third- and second-place finishes in the first two races. Then came a transmission failure and 22nd-place finish at Iowa. After that came a spin at Martins- ville, and rain ruined his charged back to the front as he ended up ninth.
Entering Friday's New England 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Whitt ranks third in the championship 46 points behind leader Ryan Truex. The driver of the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota owns two poles and is one of four drivers with three top 10s.
"Things can just end your whole day right away and there's nothing you can do about it," Whitt said. "It's just been frustrating. We haven't had any luck roll our way yet, but you never know what's going to happen the rest of the season. It's nothing against anything that we've done. Our team is awesome and everyone has done their job really well. Hopefully, things will start rolling right for us soon."
Of the nine tracks on the K&N East schedule, Whitt had only competed at Iowa prior to this sea- son. So Thursday's 90-minute practice session will be Whitt's first go around the "Magic Mile."
"With the way it is now," Whitt said, "you have to be so much on your game that you can't waste time trying to learn the track. But I've been able to pick up tracks pretty quickly. I've been very for- tunate to be good at that. You just kind of have to go for it and learn as it goes. I know the car will be fine. I have enough trust in these guys that I know the car will be handling good. It's up to me to get the track right."
